AUSTRALIAN OPEN

January 20, 2013

David Ferrer

MELBOURNE, VICTORIA

D. FERRER/K. Nishikori
6‑2, 6‑1, 6‑4

THE MODERATOR:  Questions, please.

Q.  What's the difference between today's match and last year at the Olympics?
DAVID FERRER:  Oh, different court, different weather.  Lot of things different, no?  Every match is different on a tennis.
Today I played very good, one of the best matches on my career in Australian Open.  I'm very happy with my game, no?
The result, it was in three sets, but the game, it was very, very difficult to beat Nishikori.

Q.  The key of the match should be the beginning of the first set.  You saved a couple of very important points.
DAVID FERRER:  Yes, of course.  The start of the first and second set, it was very important, no?  I had four or five breakpoints down, and I make it.  It was the key, sure.

Q.  Where has your tennis improved?
DAVID FERRER:  I am trying to improve every year my game.  I am trying to improve my serve.  I am trying to play more aggressive with my shots.  Is difficult for me now improve too much my game.
But I need to play more aggressive for to be top 10, for sure.

Q.  Your coach says that within the game, you know the game better, you follow the score better.  What does he mean?
DAVID FERRER:  Yes, sure.  I have more experience.  You know, I am 30 years old.  I played a lot of years tennis.  I am more quiet with myself, no?  This is very important for to improve my game.

Q.  You're consistently getting to this stage of Grand Slam tournaments.  What do you need to do to progress even further?
DAVID FERRER:  I don't know.  Now I want to be focus with my next match.  Is very difficult for to win a Grand Slam because there are the top four.  In this moment, the last three or four years, they are better than the other players.
But, you know, I am not thinking about if I have the chance to win a Grand Slam.  I am only focus with every match I will play.

Q.  You are in the top four ranking‑wise.
DAVID FERRER:  I am top four because Rafael is injured a long time.  Is the true.

Q.  Do you feel you're in that group?
DAVID FERRER:  No, no.  I think the top four, they are better.

Q.  It's midway through a Grand Slam.  Can you tell us mentally and physically what's the difference between the first week and second week of a slam.
DAVID FERRER:  It's very important for will be arrive not tired, feel good with physic.  And when the player arrive to the second week is because he is playing good and we are with confidence with our game, no?
So the most important I think is to will be without playing a lot of sets.

Q.  Kei told us he can learn a lot of things from you, especially defense.  If you could give him some advice, what would you give?
DAVID FERRER:  To Nishikori?

Q.  Yes.
DAVID FERRER:  Nishikori is a very great player.  I think he's going to be top 10, sure.  He has everything shots for will be up.

Q.  Specifically what kind of aspect do you think he needs to improve?
DAVID FERRER:  I don't know.  You have to ask to him.  I don't know.  I am not him.
He has everything shots.  He's young player, you know.  But for me, my opinion, is he can be to be top 10, sure.

Q.  You say you still think the top four are better.  Isn't it important for you to believe that you are as good as them?
DAVID FERRER:  It's my opinion.  But I am trying to do my best every match.  I am trying to win every match anyway, top four, top 10, or top hundred.  You know, the results, it was there, no?  I'm not making something up.
