June 28, 2012
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK
Q. If you can start with your opening remarks about your feelings about being drafted No.2.
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I mean, it's a blessing in disguise. I mean, wow. I mean, it's a big step for us to‑‑ I mean, I just want to play. I just want to play for the Charlotte Bobcats. That's what I want to do right now. Going to see what happens.
Q. Michael, wanted to ask you about your leadership capabilities; how will this help Charlotte from being able to get out of the doldrums?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: Mike did it this year. So it's going to be a challenge at first.
But I'm ready to lead the team. I'm ready to lead the team.
Q. You and Anthony were talking before he got picked. What did you say to him and what was that conversation like?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: Just whatever happens, it happens, between us two. I'm just so happy right now, man. And I'm blessed. I'm blessed.
Q. There was a lot of talk in the last few days that maybe you were going to be dropping down, three, four, five and boom, here you are, two; what's your reaction to that talk and what was your reaction once that talk was unfounded?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: Whatever happens, happens right now. Whatever happens, happens. And I just wanted to get drafted. That's it.
Q. I saw before the Draft, you were sitting not only with Anthony but Coach Cal. Did he say any final things to you guys before you were drafted tonight?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I mean, no. I mean, I love Coach Cal now and I always did. I mean, not really, not really.
Q. You and Anthony talk about going 1, 2 before the Draft?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: No. No. I was shocked at first. I was shocked. But, no, we didn't. We didn't at all.
Q. We rode up with your family today and you had a very large contingent of people. What did it mean to have all of them in the stands?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I mean, I'm home. I mean, good. My family, I mean, I'm a family guy. So, I mean, that's it. That means a lot to me. Means a lot to me.
Q. When you were in Chicago during the interview segment of the pre‑Draft camp, did you meet Michael Jordan?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: No, I didn't.
Q. So did you have any impression at all that you would go 2?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I mean, I didn't really care where I went. But, no, I didn't. I mean, I was just surprised. I was just very surprised.
Q. Did you know Kemba Walker at all just from playing in the New York area and what do you think about getting to play with a young point guard like Kemba?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I can't wait to play with Kemba. He's fast, and I mean, I just can't wait to play with him. Can't wait.
Q. Did you ever meet him just from playing in the New York area at all?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I mean, a little bit. A little bit.
Q. You're going from a college champion and the glory of that, to actually one of the worst franchises in NBA history. Is that going to be a mental thing you're going to have to deal with?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: I have a winning attitude on life and in ball, school.
No. I just want to win basketball games. That's the only thing I want to do.
Q. What's that party going to be like tonight with the 160 people you're bussing into New York City?
MICHAEL KIDD‑GILCHRIST: Oohhh. (Laughter) It's going to be good. I mean, I'm home, so it's going to be fun.
