BUICK OPEN

July 31, 2003

Craig Perks

GRAND BLANC, MICHIGAN

THE MODERATOR: Thank you, Craig, for joining us for a few minutes. Great round today. Excellent start. You had six birdies in seven holes on the back side. Why don't you talk about your round a little bit.

CRAIG PERKS: I got off to a great start, I really did. I think especially when you tee off on 10, you know that 12, 13 and 14 are sitting right there. I made a great birdie at 11 to kind of get the momentum going.

Just played 12 textbook. I had a good tee shot, about 30 yards short of the green, pitched up there, made the putt. 13, I hit a great tee shot, 3-wood from the green, 2-putted. 14, hit it right in front of the green, chipped it up there and made a par. On 16, I hit a great drive and hit it on the green in two, 2-putted, as well.

Made a great putt, probably about a 30-footer down the hill, extremely fast putt on 17. That kind of kept the momentum going. Great way to start the tournament.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. What did you think of the pin placement at 13?

CRAIG PERKS: I think there were a lot of difficult pin placements. 13 looked to be sitting in the water. When we were coming up the fairway, I think as we got up there, it was a little bit flatter. There were a number of extremely difficult pins. Looked like Sunday at a major out there. They were all tucked three and four from the edges. Some of them from the fairway looked like they weren't on the green. 13 wasn't the only pin. There were 13 or 14 tough pins out there.

Q. Can you talk about the conditions out there, the tough conditions, what enabled you to go low, probably other people after you to do the same?

CRAIG PERKS: Well, the golf course is in perfect shape. The greens are soft. We found them extremely soft. I played Monday. They were soft. They were soft Tuesday, Wednesday they were soft. They're firming up a little bit with the sunshine.

You know, basically the golf course is in perfect shape. We had perfect weather, very little wind to speak of. It's a golf course that, if you can take advantage of the par 5s, then the two short par 4s on the back, you are going to play well. That's basically what I did.

Q. You mentioned Sunday at a major. Your first round since that Sunday. Feel any different?

CRAIG PERKS: Well, it's not the British Open. In fact, I would have liked to have played on Sunday, but I didn't.

You know, it seems like like the pins out here, people are shooting so much lower than they have in the past. You know, technology, people talk about technology, the ball is going so fast. The TOUR staff is trying to tuck the pins. I think it's been a common denominator to see the pins three yards from the green. We probably had six or seven of those today. You just have to be so precise.

It's hard to get the ball extremely close with the greens as soft as they are. It's hard to fly it all the way back to the pin knowing you might go or the green. When you do short side yourself with the pin that close to the edge, it's tough to get the ball up and down.

Q. A lot of talk about Ben Curtis. How did winning a big tournament yourself change things? If Ben were to ask you what he might be expecting the next three to six months, what would you tell him?

CRAIG PERKS: It changed my life 180 degrees - some good and some bad really. I think what I would tell Ben, and that's a question I've had asked a couple times today, I think just don't expect too much. It's hard to continue to play at that level with all the distraction, all the media distractions, all the people tugging on you from so many different directions. You know, this country loves a new-found hero, and we have one with the way he played over there.

I think what he did sensibly was not play Hartford but not play last week. To come home after that dramatic win and go to Hartford would have been tough. I know he had a lot of media requests before that. I know he was on Letterman, Dan Patrick's show, all over the place. It was probably good to be at home.

When I watched the aftermath of the British, and listened to him talk, then talked to him a little bit recently, he has such a level head on his shoulders. It seems like he expected to maybe not go out and win the British Open the first time, but he expected to play well.

It looks like it's not going to change and he's going to stay kind of quiet, take it all in and learn from it.

I mean, I got so hard on myself. I was the Craig Perks before the Players that I expected someone different the Monday after the Players. I was so hard on myself, expecting to play well every single week. I made some pretty significant changes in my golf swing.

You've just got to be patient. Tiger is the best player in the world and he doesn't win every week. Just because we come out of nowhere and win, you shouldn't expect yourself to win every week.

Q. It's been about a year since you made some of these changes. Tiger was saying today how he's trying to trust his swing. Are you trusting with the adjustments you've made?

CRAIG PERKS: It's not so much trust. I'm still learning. I made such a huge change, basically overhauled the whole thing. I was so inconsistent. I had two or three good weeks a year. I got to the point now where I've got a -- my golf swing is very neutral. My setup is neutral. My shot seems to be up and down a -- a lot more up and down the same plane. It should cause a lot more consistency. It's so new to me, everything is so new.

I don't have trust yet because I haven't grasped the whole realm of what I'm trying to do. I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable. The easiest thing for me is that when I hit a poor shot, I know exactly why I did it so I can fix it on the very next one. In the past, when I had a poor shot, I'd try and compensate and I'd hit a poor shot in the other direction. Seems like when I hit a poor shot, I can come back, know what I did wrong, and fix it.

I think trust comes from being comfortable with something. I'm not comfortable yet with the changes I've made.

Q. The money on the TOUR, the prize money continues to keep going up. That's a good thing. Your thoughts on that. There's 33 millionaires already on TOUR this year in prize money, it's not even August. Your thoughts on the prize money and why it keeps going up.

CRAIG PERKS: Well, I think I heard a comment from Commissioner Finchem, that he's trying to get golf in line with other sports, NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA. The top guys are making $25 million a year on the court or on the field. I think he's just trying to get golf in line.

I think even though the economy is struggling, golf is so popular. We have Tiger to thank for that, all these new guys coming out last year and winning. It's added a lot of new names to the game. I think all the public really appreciates the good guys we are. We don't have too many bad eggs out here. I think it makes a very popular sport.

We can come out in the best weather in the country, go out on the golf course, people can watch us play. We're entertaining them, but you don't see the bad headlines about all the bad eggs in the sport. I think it's a good, popular sport. I think the Commissioner is just trying to get us in line with the rest of the other major leagues.

Q. About seven years ago you and Mike Sposa and Carl Paulson all battled it out there on the Nike Tour. Talk about the learning curve it takes. You're all starting to play well, the top today.

CRAIG PERKS: It was good to see those other guys up there. Carl and I fought it out at the Players. It was good to be up there with them. It just takes time getting comfortable. It took me four years on the Nike Tour. I kind of got comfortable where I was. Now this is my fourth year. Sprang into a different situation after winning last year. Now I'm playing with the best players in the world every single week. You have to get comfortable doing that.

This is my fourth year hears at Warwick Hills. I'm comfortable here. I think we're still learning. Although I'm old in years, I'm still young with experience out here. The more and more you get comfortable, I think the easier it is to play well.

You know, you're still going to have the superstars out here, but I think you're going to have more and more guys pushing that even up higher because we're just getting comfortable up here.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you, Craig, for joining us.
