WIMBLEDON

June 23, 2008

Kei Nishikori

LONDON, ENGLAND

M. GICQUEL/K. Nishikori
4-6, 7-5 (ret.)

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. You must be very disappointed. Can you explain the problems that you were experiencing with your abdomen and why you chose to retire when you did.
KEI NISHIKORI: Uhm, it started last week when I was playing Nottingham and I retired, too. And this couple days was okay, almost no pain, and start hurting during the first set. Last couple games, I couldn't hit serve. It was hurting so much. So much painful.
It's big tournament, but still I have tournament next -- I mean, after two weeks, so...

Q. Obviously, you're the youngest here. How disappointing was it for you having to pull out of this big moment for you in your career?
KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, it was -- I was exciting. It was my first Grand Slam. And, yeah, I'm so disappointed.

Q. Is it a long-term problem? When do you expect to be back?
KEI NISHIKORI: This injury?

Q. Yes.
KEI NISHIKORI: I hope, I don't know, one or two weeks.

Q. What were your expectations coming into the tournament?
KEI NISHIKORI: What do you mean?

Q. What did you expect? How did you expect to play coming into the tournament?
KEI NISHIKORI: Uhm, I thought I could play like normal. But start hurting during the set. I wanted to play Roger Federer, but, yeah, maybe next time.
