ORLANDO, FLORIDA
MODERATOR: Good afternoon. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Roberta Mazur, and I am the executive director of the Scout of the Year program. Today we would like to present to you the four recipients of the Scout of the Year awards.
The awards, just a brief history. The awards began in 1984. It was started by Tony Pacheco, Jim Russo and Hugh Alexander. Our first recipient in 1984 was Howie Haak. In 1985 we extended the program to honor three scouts in each region, East, West and Midwest. This year we have added an additional award called the International Award. We figured that with baseball being played worldwide, it was time to recognize the international scouting division.
The gentlemen are here for questioning. Anybody who would like to speak to them, please feel free.
Our first recipient of the International Scout Award, Ralph Avila, works for the Los Angeles Dodgers and is very well known in the Dominican Republic and Latin countries.
Our next recipient is Ray Crone, Senior. He is the Midwest recipient, works for the San Diego Padres.
On the other side we have Bob Bishop, Kansas City Royals. He is our West Coast recipient.
And last but not least, Tim Wilken with the Chicago Cubs, East Coast recipient.
For Bob, your reaction on being honored.
BOB BISHOP: It's a great honor for me. I mean, all the scouts that I've seen in the past, I mean, Joe Stevenson, Jesse Flores, I always looked up to them. It's a great honor to be given this great honor.
