WILMINGTON, DELAWARE
LAURA DAVIES: Birdie on No. 2. Hit a driver and a 7-iron to about 12 feet and holed the putt. Birdie on 5. Hit a lovely 6-iron in there about probably, ten feet just right of the hole. No. 9, hit a really good driver and a 3-iron onto the left edge of the green. The pin was on the right, and so I had about a 50-footer and lipped out. It was in for all the world, but just hit the edge and spun out. Tapped in from three or four inches. Bogey No. 10. 3-iron down the middle and sort of a disagreement on the club with my caddy and I ended up hitting a really poor 8-iron just short of the green. Hit a good chip up to six feet short, but missed the putt. Hit a poor tee shot. Hit 1-iron into the right-hand rough and then hit a 6-iron to the left of the green -- one of those where the ball was way above, but just out of the bunker, an inch, two inches out of the bunker. I could not get behind the ball and ended up shanking it out to the right in a really horrible lie and got it on the green. Missed the putt for double-bogey. 16, hit a really good drive and 4-iron which caught a bad lie actually. It was just in the first cut and the club just stopped in the ground and it came up about 50 yards short of the pin and chipped up, really good chip to about four feet and holed the putt.
Q. You caught Karrie on the front nine and then a couple misfortunate holes on the back. Was it frustrating?
LAURA DAVIES: Yeah, because that front nine really is the best I've played probably five or six -- the weather was really hard. The par 3s were playing hard. I shot 3-under and it could have been 5-, 6-, 7-under, and that's no exaggeration. I missed some really good birdie chances and was feeling good. Feeling like I really had -- I was thinking at that point if I could have a really good back nine, push on and get the lead -- at start of the day, I would never have thought that was possible.
Q. (Inaudible.)
LAURA DAVIES: It's so windy. The pins were good. Some of the pins were tucked on the par 3s. The par 3s around here make this course. They are really hard. They were really tucked today, and I hit just really good irons into the wind. The other players, I saw the par 3s tend to back up because they are that difficult. I hit really good irons in compared to what the others seemed to be doing.
Q. Could you tell us some of the birdie chances you might have had on the front nine?
LAURA DAVIES: No. 1 was about 15 feet. No. 3 -- No. 3 was a good up-and-down for par there, actually. No. 4 was about 15 feet. 6 was in for the world. Just went across the edge; had a good pace. Probably 8-footer on the par -3 8. Lip-out on 9. Just one of those days. And then missed a really short chance on 11. It just -- I didn't putt as well today as I have been and that's why I think I only shot 1-under because I played better today than I did the other two days, barring the shank out there on 14.
Q. Seemed like a lot of players were having trouble with their putts today. Were the greens different than they had been?
LAURA DAVIES: I think they didn't seem as smooth, I think because there's so much overnight rain and I think that was the part of the course that was affected because the greens are so smooth. The people with the feet around the holes were making it just that little bit bumpy, and I think that's possibly why. Annika holed absolutely nothing and I holed absolutely nothing.
Q. Do you still feel you are right there, and was it important that Karrie did not run away?
LAURA DAVIES: I was not pleased that she didn't make birdies, but I was pleased she didn't get too far ahead, and that gives me a chance. Last Sunday, I shot a 64 and I need to do the same thing again. I probably need a 63. Depending on the weather, 14-, 15-under is going to be a really good score. So, I have my chance. Not going to be easy, mind you.
Q. Do you feel disappointed you didn't make up more ground on Karrie?
LAURA DAVIES: Oh, definitely. I had it there for the taking. If we had not had the disagreement with the club on 10, I would be 11- or 12-under myself, I guarantee you. And that bogey really set me back; just took my confidence away. At the time I was just cruising. We had just lipped out for eagle. Had hit a success of fantastic irons into the holes, and it just looked like it was there for the taking. The lead, anyway.
Q. What was the disagreement?
LAURA DAVIES: That hole, we always seem to hit the wrong club, it seems, and I was being decisive and Mark wasn't.
