SENIOR BRITISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP

July 24, 2003

Russell Weir

TURNBERRY, SCOTLAND

SCOTT CROCKETT: 67 in the first round, some comments on the day overall. What pleased you specifically?

RUSSELL WEIR: It was a surprise with the weather. The forecast was not that great this morning. So as we progressed around, it got better. So that, and the fact that I played quite steady helped a lot.

SCOTT CROCKETT: Anything particularly that pleased you about your game?

RUSSELL WEIR: Putted quite well today. I started to drive the ball a little bit better. Still not 100% but I'm happy with it now.

SCOTT CROCKETT: You birdied the third hole; how did you manage that?

RUSSELL WEIR: I hit driver and 6-iron to about ten feet and holed the putt.

SCOTT CROCKETT: You bogeyed 6. What happened there?

RUSSELL WEIR: I 3-putted that from the front edge.

The par 5, I 2-putted from just off the fringe.

Bogey the next one. Took the wrong club back to the tee and the wind changed. I hit it in the bunker ended up making a good five.

9, I holed a real long putt. I don't know exactly how long it was, but it must have been about 40 feet right.

12, I holed a nice putt from about 18 feet. I hit 7-iron.

17, I hit it right to the fringe and 2-putted.

SCOTT CROCKETT: Chance at the last?

RUSSELL WEIR: I had a chance at the last. Tried to sneak in the side door. The putt was about 20 feet.

SCOTT CROCKETT: But good day overall.

RUSSELL WEIR: Delighted, thanks.

Q. Have you not been playing well?

RUSSELL WEIR: Well, in the practice round, I was a little bit shaky off the tee at times. I made a slight change in the ball position and that helped. Kept the ball down a little bit, just to keep it a little bit low lower.

Q. What does it feel like to be in a field with Nicklaus and Watson?

RUSSELL WEIR: It's very exciting.

Q. Have you had any contact with them?

RUSSELL WEIR: Well, I've eaten at the same restaurant as a few of them. That's about all.

Q. Your favourite player?

RUSSELL WEIR: Oh, yes. Aye, Arnold Palmer was my favorite player. I go as far back as Mr. Palmer. (Laughing).

Not really, no. I believe he's having dinner at the same place we're staying at tonight. We may have a chat.

Q. Where are you staying?

RUSSELL WEIR: Just at the Maiden's, Whale's Inn (ph). It's very good. That was the first priority.

Q. Your form?

RUSSELL WEIR: No. I don't know, it's not been that great this year. I'm 42nd on the Order of Merit, so not where I'd like to be.

Q. Anything particular in your game --

RUSSELL WEIR: Well, I think the fact that I've contracted diabetes has made me a little bit uncoordinated, just up-and-down, good days, bad days.

Q. How long have you had that?

RUSSELL WEIR: That's been almost two years now.

Q. Do you take medication?

RUSSELL WEIR: Yeah, I just take tablets. Moderation and everything.

Q. What does it affect?)

RUSSELL WEIR: Well, I was talking to Jim McAllister, he says it does affect your coordination, but I think it's more the fact that I really haven't been playing particularly well. I've always been meaning to go by and see Mr. Torrance but he's obviously very busy.

Q. When was that?

RUSSELL WEIR: A good number of years ago. I see him at tournaments but he's too busy.

Q. When was the last time you were in a Press Centre interview?

RUSSELL WEIR: It would probably be the Scottish, Gleneagles. It was a Tour event, I believe I shot 68 or something like that. I think that would be last time. More years than I care to remember.

I don't feel quite good enough today, funnily enough. I think just tension. In a big tournament, you get tensed up, your legs start going a little bit.

Probably just excited more than anything, I think.

Q. Have you been in a field with Nicklaus and Watson before.

RUSSELL WEIR: Haven't been across to America playing in any of these PGA events, no.
