MIAMI OPEN PRESENTED BY ITAú

March 24, 2025

Magda Linette

Miami, Florida, USA

Press Conference

M. LINETTE/C. Gauff

6-4, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Magda, congratulations. Into your first Miami Open quarterfinal. Can you just give us your keys to winning this match today?

MAGDA LINETTE: Thank you. Yeah, I think it was really important for me to keep pressing Coco's serve to make sure she feels the pressure. I'm glad that I was returning well.

I was really brave. Then I was able to back it up with pretty solid service games because she's really tough. Still when you manage to break her serve, she's still so tough. She's competing so well. That was really important to back it up.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Coco broke you back in the second set. Did you feel the tide turning, and how did you stem it? How did you stop it?

MAGDA LINETTE: She played very aggressive. I was kind of expecting it. I was a little bit upset I didn't react better because that happened already before to me in the matches with her, so I was kind of trying to pay attention.

So when it kind of slipped and I wasn't ready, I was a bit upset. I was trying to stay as calm as I can because I know that once I just lose my grip, it will be really tough.

Q. Last year she got you in I guess the Masters quarters, right, and you probably remembered that. Could you sense that she was a little bit off today, especially I think 12 double faults, and you took advantage of that?

MAGDA LINETTE: Yeah, 100%. Even on the bad days, she's so tough because she can just compete so well. Obviously you get your chances, but still you have to work so hard for every single point, every single game. Especially that, okay, she does double faults, but then she comes back and returns really well, so that was important to back it up on my service games.

I think one thing that -- because Coco is always on the biggest courts. Everybody show her matches, so you kind of see when she has a little bit weaker days. You can see her serve is sometimes vulnerable to do double faults. I think that's something you know and you try to get a chance when you can because you might not get another chance.

So that's how it kind of was, and I felt last matches that I had slight chances. When I just didn't use them or she played really well, I was punished immediately. So today she was giving me more than one chance, and that was nice for me that I had a little bit more room there.

Q. Paolini is next. You got her last time, she said. She told us how consistent you are. What's the key to beating Jasmine?

MAGDA LINETTE: Kind of similar, I would say. Last time we both returned so well, so I think I'm really aware of that, how well she can return. So I'll be really paying attention to that.

I'll try to also make her feel the pressure. I know that the court is a little bit quicker, so I'll need to adjust to that. I think the match before was really tough for me, but the last one we played gave me a little bit of an idea what to do.

So I think I'm a little bit more ready than I was after, you know, the first loss. So, yeah, I hope I can bring the level I had today of steadiness, competitiveness, and really quite a lot of discipline. So I really hope I can bring that tomorrow too.
