Quick Quotes
Q. What were your first thoughts when this concept came out over the last 24, 48 hours?
CATLIN: I mean, I love it. I always love it when there's a chance where you can earn your spot. Because then, nobody can take it away from you. So, I loved having the chance.
I've been playing really nicely. I almost won in New Zealand and put in some nice work last week in Hong Kong. And Kevin walked past me on Saturday or Sunday, and he's like how are you feeling? I'm like, I feel great, cause I did. I was feeling really nice. So yeah, I was excited for the chance.
Q. Talk a little bit about the format itself. Did you like any of that?
CATLIN: I mean, I see both sides of it. You kind of have to get off to a good start. But a lot can happen. Maybe do it after nine holes. I feel like six; there are 12 more holes. Let's say you're one over, and the other guys are even par and you get knocked out, but you're shot back. I don't know. That seems a bit unfair, I guess.
But I mean, I can see the other side of it too. It kind of forces guys out of the gate, to get after it and play well. And so, I don't know. I was ready to play. I knew I had to go out and play good golf from the start.
Q. Like the promotions event. In terms of innovation and what LIV’s trying to do things differently.
CATLIN: Yeah, a hundred percent. They're kind of trying to shake things up, and this definitely shook us up. We weren't ready for it. So, it was cool. It'd be interesting to see if it's something that continues, if it's needed. You never know, but I think it's a cool concept, and hey, I obviously liked it.
Q. And for those who maybe aren't truly aware of what the role of a reserve is and what it's kind of like through a week, maybe help some of the fans understand what it means, what it's like to be a reserve and how important this is for you to earn that opportunity.
CATLIN: Yeah, it's tough. We want to play. We put a lot of work in. We're basically signed to be there for all three days now. Last year, basically once everybody started on Friday and Saturday, we were good because it was three count four.
But now with all four scores counting, we have to be there. We have to be there the whole time. So, that actually makes it a little bit harder mentally because you have to be there watching all this stuff happen, and you want to be a part of it. So yeah, it's difficult, and I just wanted a chance. I just wanted another chance to show what I can do.
I played some great golf last year, and I know what I'm capable of, and it’s nice to have that opportunity.
Q. What did it mean to keep that card clean on the first side while everybody else maybe had some struggles? Was that in the front of your mind just kind of trying to eliminate any unforced errors?
CATLIN: You're just trying to stay steady. This isn't a golf course where you're very often going to go out and shoot 63. This is a challenging golf course, especially on that back nine; there are some really strong par fours. It's a course that rewards steady play in hitting consistently good golf shots.
It's a very fair test. It was nice to execute. Like I said after we finished, I've been putting in a lot of hard work on my game, trying to continue to improve. And it's just nice to continue to see that hard work paying off.
Q. Was there maybe a turning point today? Did you ever get comfortable, like I got this?
CATLIN: Nope, I knew I had to just keep the pedal down. It was a few times last year where it was like I was battling to the end, and I didn't quite get it done in a couple of the international series.
Unfortunately, it ended up costing me a LIV spot, so I'm not going to let that happen again. I'm going to step on people's necks, basically. You know what I mean? I’ve got to get this done; it's just that simple.
Q. You mentioned earlier your experience having played here quite a bit. Do you like your chances, kind of moving into this week?
CATLIN: 100%. Like I said, it's a golf course that really fits my style of game. You have to be on it. You have to be hitting good quality shots, and you have to have a good short game because you're not going to hit every green and you might miss a fairway and have a difficult chance getting it on the green. You have the ball up and down. So, I think it'll expose the all-around best player, which I've always felt is one of my strengths.
Q. What does it mean to join the Ironheads GC? How do you feel being a part of the squad?
CATLIN: It's awesome. I've known Kevin for a while. We played together in Korea at the Korean Open in 2018. We both finished pretty well. I've known him pretty well ever since. He's a great guy. Works hard at it; similar mindset. So, being a part of his team and being a part of the Ironheads GC is a great opportunity, and I hope I can lift the team to new heights.
