J. SINNER/A. de Minaur
6-3, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Jannik, well done. How did you feel for your first match in Turin this year?
JANNIK SINNER: It's a great start for my side for this event, for this tournament, considering I haven't played for four weeks an official match. I'm glad that I managed to play this kind of level today.
I had in the beginning some moments, which is normal, and then I found myself on the court, which I'm very, very happy.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. What is it with the way you play Alex, to have the record that you have against him? He's so tough, such a competitor, but you've got his number.
JANNIK SINNER: I feel like every match, it's very difficult to play against him. He's a great fighter. You have to earn every point you play.
But I still feel like that every time we play against, he changes a couple of things, so I have to be very aware. It's very difficult. We don't have to see only the result, but also how the match goes.
He was close also today in some moments. I managed to go away in the first and also in the second set. But if this is not happening and I don't break him back on 2-1, it goes 3-1, the set can be over quite fast, so...
I'm just happy because it's a very tough match against him in any way. But let's see what's coming in the next times when we play against.
Q. You've talked about when Simone first came on your team, he used to give you a lot of different technical tips after the match. You were almost overwhelmed by so many tips. Now it seems you've grown a lot from this coaching relationship. How do you two prepare for a match? Can you walk me through that process? Are you reviewing video? Does he write tips down for you?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, in the beginning was something new for me. Then after we got to know each other a little bit better...
It takes time. I started to understand him and he starts to understand how I am as a player and also as a person, how I react in positive and negative moments in the court. Of course, I'm very, very happy how everything is going. I feel like we still have some room to improve.
But still he watches the most of it against each opponent and then he gives me some details or feedback. Then I have to be brave as a player trying to understand when I have to use certain things on the court.
But every day is a bit different.
Q. What are the challenges about playing Taylor Fritz? Everyone talks about his serve. He was very good staying in the long rallies with Medvedev. Do you feel like he's also still improving at age 27, adding more things to his game every time you play him?
JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, of course. Felt like he has improved a lot in the past one and a half, two years. Serving much better. Hitting the ball very, very hard. He's a great competitor. Today he played a great match against Daniil.
I have to be at my top if I want to win or if I want to get close. I practiced with him in the beginning of the week. It was a very tough practice set or match, however.
It's going to be tough. This I know. I know that I have to raise my level. Hopefully I can do that, then we see how it goes.
