BLACK DESERT CHAMPIONSHIP

October 11, 2024

Patrick Fishburn

Ivins, Utah, USA

Quick Quotes

Q. Unfortunately got to start with the shot on 2. 3-iron that you hit off the tee there?

PATRICK FISHBURN: 4-iron. Yeah, even worse. I struggled with layups sometimes. That was a layup shot where you had 100 yards to work with. I just, I don't know if it was lack of focus, but probably should have picked a little more of a specific target, made an aggressive swing rather than trying to get too cute, maybe lackadaisical. I won't make that mistake again.

Q. What was it about this course that was challenging for you this week?

PATRICK FISHBURN: I didn't control my spin very well. The ball was really ripping back for me and I spun it off so many false fronts, so many decent shots that didn't turn out very good.

That was an issue.

And didn't hit my irons very well. It was little sections, little quadrants you need to hit to to score well. I just kept on missing those on the wrong side. Felt like I had -- didn't have great looks that often and the ones I did I didn't really roll the ball that well.

It was an uphill battle out there.

Q. The quadrants are of course a design characteristic of a Weiskopf design. You get on the wrong side and he wants the lag putt to be really hard. Was lag putting a challenge for you then?

PATRICK FISHBURN: Yeah, for sure. It's a great design. Rewards a good shot and punishes a bad one. That's all you would expect, is if you take it on, then, yeah, you can hit it close and get a good look. If you don't, yeah, you're going to have a tough two-putt. If you short side yourself out here, then you're in trouble there as well.

There is definitely some tricks out there. You can take it low. We've seen that; guys are playing well. Yeah, you just got to be -- I think precision yardage, controlling your distances with your irons and wedges is kind of the key out here. I think I kind of struggled with that this week.

Q. Vegas next week. You've seen Summerlin before. And then ZOZO. First time in Japan. Tell me your thoughts about going over to Japan?

PATRICK FISHBURN: Yeah, it's going to be a unique experience. I love the Hibachi grill. I don't know if that's an American thing. Probably don't do that over there. Yeah, they're probably not doing the choo-choo trains and the volcanoes.

No, it will be an awesome experience because it's no cut. That's a nice thing. And it's going to be a great field. Unique experience.

So really looking forward to it. I've heard nothing but great things. Zac has been raving about it, everyone is raving about how cool it is, how great the golf course, how nice the people are, how great the food is.

Really it's going to be a great experience. I've never gone that direction.

Q. What's your sense of how this operation has gone from a player's standpoint this week?

PATRICK FISHBURN: Seemed really well. It's really tricky because they're trying to shuttle us in between holes. In our group we had a pretty good gathering so it was -- it's tricky. Thank goodness for great volunteers volunteering their time and being willing to be out here. It takes a big staff to get this thing done.

They've done a great job. It's early wake-ups and not finishing last night, so there is a lot of work that goes into it. Yeah the staff is incredible and the volunteers, really appreciate them taking their time.

I think everyone is having a great experience. Players that have talked to me said it's something they have never seen before, like they landed on Mars.

I think they're all enjoying the challenge and the week for sure.

Q. If you could just talk about the double I guess great part about playing with a good friend in your home state and how much fun you had out there this week.

PATRICK FISHBURN: Yeah, we had a blast. Zac and I have played a lot of rounds together. We usually both play a little bit better together, which we didn't -- Zac is a going to make the cut; I'm not.

We were probably both a little bit off. Glad he made the cut. You never know. Zac is the kind of guy if he sees a few go in he can get hot. This is a great course for him. He's really good with his distance control and irons.

We had a lot of fun, just a relaxed group. It was really fun to see. We had some friends from high school, people from BYU, Ogden, Provo. Really cool to see all the support we got.
