ROLEX SHANGHAI MASTERS

October 6, 2024

Daniil Medvedev

Shanghai, China

Mixed Zone

D. MEDVEDEV/M. Arnaldi

5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Q. That's not your first altercation with an umpire recently, and I just wonder, do you worry that that kind of thing will detract from your tennis, you know, you get point penalties, what do you think about that?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Well, that's the thing, you know, I tried many different things in my career, trying to stay calm, trying to be, sometimes, not try, but sometimes I go very crazy. And I think, you know, what works is whatever you feel like will work at this moment. It should not cross the line, that's for sure, because you can get defaulted, and that's not nice. Today I didn't.

What I did is, I got angry when they first called violation, so I made an impression that I'm saying something under my hand or under my mouth, how do you say it, but I didn't say anything, I was murmuring something like, Oh, you're bad, you're bad, you're bad.

Then I got the second code, which I guess could be, you know, maybe deserved, but then, and then I went crazy. But I knew that at this moment, if I manage the moment of the match, I lost the first set, if I manage to use it in my advantage, I could do it, and I managed to do it, so sometimes I need it. I just need to not cross the line and be friends after the match because that's how sport works also.

Q. Long match. Is it more satisfying for you to win a long match or would you rather get through quickly?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Oh, I love quick matches, 6-2, 6-2, 50 minutes is the best match possible, honestly. But, again, I'm sorry to tell this again, but I wonder if I'm right, I do think that last two, three years the matches are in general longer on the ATP Tour, because the balls don't go that fast, more longer rallies, more longer games, because you cannot serve aces, and I wonder if I'm right or if I'm telling some nonsense.

Q. Next match you will play either Tsitsipas or Muller, can you give us any thoughts?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yeah, I don't think they ever played, and Alex can play well, I would think. Regarding the matchup, I think it's not going to be that easy for him. Tsitsipas likes to throw around forehand, goes to the net.

Tsitsipas, it's been long time we didn't play, I think. I generally like to play him, but he's a very strong player, so it's a strong opponent for a fourth round.

I played Alex this year at Wimbledon, and he played out of this world, and I was almost lucky, I mean, it's not luck because I fought my best and I played well also, but he played very well in Wimbledon. So I will look at their match, I think they're playing finally tomorrow because of the rain, so I'm going to look at their match and get ready for the winner.

Q. You have a really interesting stat in your career in that you've won 20 titles, but never in the same city twice.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: Yeah, yeah, crazy.

Q. Do you sort of think, Wow, I've won in so many different places, or do you think, I want to win the same tournament?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I definitely want to win the same tournament. I mean, I'm 28, I'm not any more 22. This year without the title so far, so I definitely want to win a title somewhere in a city where I won before, a tournament I won before.

At the same time, you know, to be a hundred percent honest, if I win a 21st title somewhere like Melbourne or even Beijing or something, it's also nice to have this stat going, but I would prefer to win it here this week and forget about it.

Q. You've been coming here since 2017, how much do you think you've changed as a person since then?

DANIIL MEDVEDEV: I mean, we all, as persons, I do believe that we are born with some qualities and some qualities our parents bring to us and then some qualities we get by growing up.

So I, for sure, have some qualities from 2017, and in some moments I changed. I mean, I have a daughter. I'm thinking differently on the court, outside the court. But some things doesn't change. So, tough question, and I wouldn't be able to answer you better than what I did right now (laughing).
