ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP

October 3, 2024

Cameron John

St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland

Quick Quotes

Q. Nine birdies and an eagle. What did you do well out there.

CAMERON JOHN: I obviously took advantage of the fact that it wasn't that windy out here. We had a practice round Monday and it was the first time I had seen the course and I was like, wow, this place is like pretty brutal.

And then rocked up today and I was like, everyone else is going to go low so I might as well. Then I got pretty aggressive and hit a lot of good shots, and I obviously managed to roll some putts in which was nice.

Q. You're from Victoria. Have you played courses like this before?

CAMERON JOHN: We were talking about this out on course, and probably the most similar to this would be down at like the national in Australia or in Victoria, sorry. That was probably the most similar, I would say, links kind of golf. Bunkers are probably not quite as punishing. But yeah, that's probably as much as I've got out here.

Q. We look at the leaderboard and your name pops up. Tell us about your golfing pedigree, where you come from. I know you played cricket for Australia. Tell us your history of golf, where you played.

CAMERON JOHN: Yeah, so I played growing up at Churchill Park Golf Club, a little short, dinky course in Endeavour Hills with my dad growing up. Went from there, I started playing at Commonwealth Golf Club, which is Sandbelt. I'm fortunate enough to live like five minutes from there. So I'm out there all the time.

And then I turned pro in 2018, and since then, just been grinding away pretty much.

Q. Is that mainly Australia you're playing?

CAMERON JOHN: I've played the odd Asian Tour event, the odd, like, co-sanctioned European Tour event. Yeah, majority of the stuff in Australia. I've played a lot of like amateur golf internationally.

But then since that point, it was tough, my first couple years, I planned on doing Q-Schools and that sort of thing and then the world went into a bit of a lockdown for a bit. But that's okay. It was just being patient enough to get through that.

Q. Your World Ranking is just over a thousand, you're up there, but you're playing at St Andrews, you're playing at Carnoustie, you're playing at Kingsbarns with the world's greatest players. That must be great to test yourself against these players?

CAMERON JOHN: Yeah, absolutely. I've played some pretty awesome golf like the last 12 months, and I just kind of felt like coming out here, it was like, you know, we'll see what happens. I've done all the preparation I can and I just kept telling myself that I've prepared for it, so we'll just kind of see what happens. I'm not going to hold it against myself either way.

Q. Finally, St Andrews tomorrow. That will be special.

CAMERON JOHN: Absolutely. We were there yesterday, and I haven't been back since 2016, and I was just like, this place hasn't changed, and I would not want it to change. Like it's fantastic.
