Press Conference
B. HADDAD MAIA/C. Wozniacki
6-2, 3-6, 6-3
THE MODERATOR: Caroline, if you could, your thoughts on the match.
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, I mean, obviously as an athlete, matches like this, you're disappointed to lose and not be through. I think it was a tight one. I didn't start off my best. I was finding it hard to find a rhythm. The lefty.
I think Armstrong is a little different as well to play on, because there is that wind tunnel kind of going through in between the stands, and it's just a little different. It took me just a little time to kind of get used to that. Then I thought I played really well for about two sets. Just came up a little bit short today.
THE MODERATOR: Questions.
Q. Obviously, like you said, not the result you want, but clearly showed out there you're much better than your ranking. In many ways very close to competing with players ranked much higher. What motivation do you take from a match like this going forward?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Yeah, I mean, I know that I'm better than my ranking, so I wasn't surprised. I came in there trying to win the match and wanting to win and believing that I was going to win.
Obviously didn't have the best start but then fought my way back into it, and just kept trying to do things that I knew that would give me success. I think it's always tricky playing a lefty. I think she caught me quite a few times serving that lefty both into the body on the right side, it's just hard to get out of the way.
Yeah, I feel like that was kind of the biggest difference today. I didn't feel like I could return as comfortably as I normally can, and that's credit to her for using her leftiness, as well.
Q. It seems like you pretty still are able to compete on the highest level. Where do you see yourself in women's tennis in general? What's the biggest challenge for you maybe compared to others, like, you know, to stay at this level?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: Well, I think, you know, my body and making sure that it's 100% and I can stay healthy I think is the main thing. That's the biggest challenge at this point. I think that's the biggest thing really. To be able to compete every single day is not easy, and to feel good every single day is not easy.
You know, I know that I can compete against the best players, I know I can beat the best players, but I also know that, you know, to win a tournament you need to win five, six, seven matches in a row, and that's where sometimes it gets a little hard. That's something that, you know, my body has struggled with this year.
But at the end of the day, I'm proud of how I have been fighting. I give it my all every single time. That's really all you can do. I'm proud of that.
Q. You didn't seem like it was likely you would play much more this season, but given how you played this week, do you feel like you might want to enter a few more tournaments before the end of the year to prepare for next?
CAROLINE WOZNIACKI: I don't know. I think, you know, I just have to sit down with the family and kind of see what's best for us. Then kind of go from there.
I don't really think this result has any kind of bearing on what I'm going to do the rest of the season. I think right now I just need to take a deep breath and, you know, kind of go through the motions here. And then take it from there.
