Jannik Sinner

New York, New York, USA

Press Conference

J. SINNER/T. Paul

7-6, 7-6, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Jannik, your thoughts on the win.

JANNIK SINNER: Yes, it was tough match. Started off not so good, but tried to stay there mentally. You know, two sets that could have gone in both ways, and happy that it went my way.

Yeah, I'm happy to be in the next round.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English.

Q. You won two tiebreaks and have some great stats over the last few months. I want to know if you have some techniques about meditation, visualization before those moments. What's happening in your mind in those moments?

JANNIK SINNER: Not really. I always get more exciting also when you play important points, important moments. And no, in my mind, this is why we practice for. This is why you make repetition in the practice courts, and where you feel more safe, where you have to maybe change up couple of things trying to surprise him. You have to serve a bit smarter. In the second-set tiebreak I didn't serve very well, but trying to find a solution somehow.

Yeah, you know, tiebreaks, they can go both ways. You have to accept it if they are going the other way, and for sure it depends also how you played the game before. If you're 6-5 up, for example, and the other one is serving, you cannot be a bit more aggressive. In worse case you're in the tiebreak.

Yeah, trying to play with the score a bit, I think that was important today.

Q. You said you enjoy pressure moments. Has that always been the case since you were younger or something you've come to embrace with age and maturity?

JANNIK SINNER: Yes, I had those periods where I lost more tiebreaks. I mean, it's normal, but you try to learn from this. I mean, yes, I always try to play with, when it's more feeling of the match, no. Tiebreaks you have it, breakpoints you have it.

I come from skiing. When skiing, you make one mistake, and the game is over or the race is over. In tennis, you can, it's a bit different mentality. Yeah, I think that's it.

Q. A famous coach say that the winner celebrates and the loser has to explain. In your case, it seems different. You always try to analyze and explain even your wins. Sometimes even before you talk to your team. What do you say today of this match? How do you analyze that?

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, it was, as I said, a tough match. Obviously, you know, I do believe that I can play couple of better points sometimes, but, you know, and also trying to make this extra step more.

But, you know, he's a tough opponent. You know, you have to accept he's moving very well, he can mix up the game. I'm happy about the win today.

Q. I just wonder how you found the atmosphere? Obviously you're playing against an American, on the night, on Arthur Ashe. Tommy said how those are the games you want to play. Just wonder how you found it being the opposition player.

JANNIK SINNER: Yeah, it's different than day sessions, but it was nice to be part of this match. You know, playing against an American here on this court in any case is difficult. Night sessions, that gives a bit more tough atmosphere. And matches, in my mind, it's nice to be part of it. We both try to make a good match out of it, which they come to see a good match.

Today we both made a lot of mistakes sometimes, but it was a bit windy, a bit breezy, it was difficult to play. Yeah, I think that's it.
