AIG WOMEN'S OPEN

August 22, 2024

Jenny Shin

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, UK

Mixed Zone

JENNY SHIN: The ball was wobbling on the tee and a lot of us were thinking, how are we going to play?

But we just knew from No. 7 until the 13th hole, it was going to be a battle regardless of whether it's raining or not. I mean, I've never really played in this kind of wind before because it just felt relentless. Like I experienced a similar wind in the Bahamas before, but it was like, coming and going, coming and going. You could find a little gap in between, like seconds, where you could hit the ball. But it was absolutely relentless today. So I'm extremely happy with an under par.

Q. What did it feel like? 3-under, but what did it feel like? Like a 60?

JENNY SHIN: Yeah, hard to explain. It was such a long day, as well. It felt like I was there the whole day. And I feel like I did a pretty good job staying calm.

And really not 3-putting out there is a huge factor. A lot of 20-, 40-, 35-footers. If you start 3-putting those, it starts getting in your head, and I think I did a pretty good job of managing that and 2-putting and making the 4-footers on the way in.

Q. Someone as slight as you, must have been a stability issue on putts, short ones, and even just following through on an iron shot.

JENNY SHIN: Yeah, I actually changed my entire set up for the putting just for the last two weeks. Well, last week and this week. I'm much lower to the ground.

If anybody remembers, Michelle Wie tabletop, that's basically what it feels like to me, and it has helped. So really the shots -- I don't know, we've played in the wind enough where we know how to get the ball forward. So that's not the biggest issue.

But it's definitely those three-, four-footers, like left-to-right, that wind pushing you.

No. 11 today was just unreal. Like that par 3, I had a 12-footer for par. I left it four feet short, and I was just thinking, I was trying to God like, Oh, my God, please don't make me miss this.

Q. Putting downwind, you were four feet short?

JENNY SHIN: No. It was just straight into. It was right-to-left wind and it was a straight putt, and I was like, how far right do I play this? It was really shaky. Like I was like, oh, my God, I hope I make this. And when I did make it, my adrenaline just shot up. Like my endorphins and everything just shot up immediately. Yeah, fun round.
