U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

August 14, 2024

Tommy Morrison

Chaska, Minnesota, USA

Hazeltine National Golf Club

Quick Quotes

Q. You jumped on him early, it looked like, 3-up early. How much was that -- to get that momentum early, how much of that was a factor today?

TOMMY MORRISON: Yeah, momentum is everything in match play. Golf course is playing really hard, and I think birdieing 2, 3, and 7 with no bogeys. So I put the pressure on Lev. He's a great player. Just kind of kept the pressure on all day.

Q. Seems like it's a little different conditions than you guys faced on stroke play. The wind is up a little more. It's cooler, overcast. Did you have to adjust to anything? In Texas, I think, you're probably used to playing in the wind.

TOMMY MORRISON: Yeah, I've been playing in wind all summer.

The practice round that I played here on Saturday was super windy, but it was the opposite direction. Regardless, I got to see what this place is like in the wind. Obviously the greens are getting faster, and the rough is only getting thicker. It got pretty crusty out there. It was really tough.

Q. You've had a pretty good summer, that European Amateur and then playing in The Open. How much has that experience played a role this week?

TOMMY MORRISON: Yeah, I think I've gained a lot of confidence this summer. I felt like I got a monkey off my back or off my shoulders after getting that win and then did some nice things at The Open. That's only helped.

Then played okay at Western and was close there in match play. So I've done a lot of good things that have given me confidence.

Q. This is your second U.S. Am?

TOMMY MORRISON: Second, yes, sir.

Q. You didn't make match play the last time, I think two years ago?

TOMMY MORRISON: No, I was close to dead last at Ridgewood.

Q. You had a good run at the Junior last year, in the quarters. Was that your best finish in the USGA?

TOMMY MORRISON: Yes, that sounds right, last year at the Junior. What was last year?

Q. Quarters. Obviously the game's changed a lot in a year.

TOMMY MORRISON: Yeah, I've matured a lot for sure.
