OMNIUM BANQUE NATIONALE

August 10, 2024

Alexander Zverev

Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Press Conference

A. ZVEREV/H. Rune

6-3, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: First of all, congrats, Sascha. How does it feel to get the win in two sets under the tricky situation there?

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: Yeah, I mean, difficult to play for sure. I knew coming in that it's not going to be pretty tennis, it's not going to be a fantastic match because it's not possible with this kind of wind.

I knew I had to just find a way to win, and I did that today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Last time you played, it was a marathon at the French Open. How pleased are you that you were able to finish the match pretty quickly today in two sets?

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: Yeah, I wish I could have finished quicker, you know, winning 6-3 the second set. Yeah, obviously extremely different conditions: French Open, clay court, middle of the night when it was super cold, super slow.

Here it's still pretty quick. Of course, very, very windy, so difficult to play. But, look, I'm happy with the win. I'm happy to be in the quarterfinals.

Of course, it was not the best tennis both of us ever played, but again, with these kind of conditions it's not possible to do. So the most important thing was to get the win today.

Q. Can you say a couple of words about your next opponent, Sebastian Korda, your next opponent?

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: I think he is playing great tennis at the moment. He just won Washington, right, so he must be playing and feeling pretty well. He had a great win today against Taylor Fritz I feel like. So, yeah, I'm expecting a tough match.

Hopefully different conditions, and hopefully it will be entertaining to watch. I'm looking forward to tomorrow.

Q. Again, follow-up, have you ever played him? What kind of match --

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: No, I have never played him.

Q. Is there one thing in particular with the wind that's pretty tough to handle, serve, or what's the toughest part?

ALEXANDER ZVEREV: For me the toughest part is just the baseline game. You cannot hit the aggressive shots that you maybe want to take because you cannot take as much risk as you want to. You have to be more patient.

It's something that I had to learn over the years. I was not a great player when it was windy historically-wise, so it's definitely something I had to learn. I'm getting better at it, and I'm happy about that.
