J. SINNER/B. Coric
6-2, 6-4
THE MODERATOR: Congrats, Jannik. How did you feel for your first match back on tour after Wimbledon?
JANNIK SINNER: Yes, I was very happy and excited to go back on court. For sure it was a tough match, but I served quite well in important moments and returned well in the games when I broke him.
So very positive start. So, yeah, let's see what's coming.
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.
Q. There are a few players that had a tough day today for different reasons. Stefanos lost. Casper lost a set as well. Daniil Medvedev lost. How do you see the draw before you, and is there something particular that could explain why it may be tough on the court today?
JANNIK SINNER: It's very difficult. It's not easy to play and to play here in these conditions. You know, there's sometimes a little bit of breeze. The ball flies. So it's tough to get into the rhythm.
Obviously after Miami, it's the first time back on hard court also, so that's a scenario. The first match is always very difficult and tough. I was fortunate to play also a couple of matches in doubles, you know, to get this match feeling back.
Yeah, I don't watch about whoever lost or won. At the moment I watch about myself, about my game, what I have to improve, what I have to do to get better. I think that's the most important thing at the moment for me.
Q. Is there one thing that you want to improve going forward?
JANNIK SINNER: Well, for sure to play as many matches as possible here in the U.S. swing now, but to do that I have to improve my serve a little bit.
I'm trying to move the ball around. Today I tried some variations, which didn't work as I wanted to, but I know in my mind that that's the right way and the right path, trying to be more unpredictable on court. Yeah, just trying to get better.
Q. Did it help that you arrived here in Montreal last week and you practiced a lot with Alex Gallardo since last week?
JANNIK SINNER: We had some very good sessions. Obviously in the beginning I was not in perfect shape physically and mostly tennis-wise. I haven't touched a racquet for quite a long time.
But, yeah, as I said, I feel like what's more important is to start off with the doubles. You can make practice sessions. You can feel good in practice sessions, but at the end of the day what matters is how you play on the match days.
Today was a positive day, and let's see what's coming tomorrow.
Q. Just a quick question about Italian tennis in general. I think there are three or four players in the top 50, and Flavio really broke out yesterday in an amazing match against Felix. Is there one thing in particular that could explain the success of Italian players on tour right now?
JANNIK SINNER: As I always said, we are lucky because we have junior tournaments, we have future events, and then we have a lot of challenger events in Italy, which potentially could give a chance for the young players, you know, having some wild cards, trying to understand what the level is until a certain point and talking about ranking-wise.
Then after we have also big events. In Rome we have the year-end finals. Also Davis Cup after US Open you have in Bologna. We have a lot of movement. We have great coaches. You know, the structures are very nice build-up to get as many good Italian players as possible.
At the moment we are in a very good position. You know, we saw that in the Olympic Games also. It was nice. Yeah, it's just nice to see a huge part of Italian tennis coming into the tennis world.
Mostly we are all very young, which is very nice. Everyone is different player. You know, it's not that everyone plays in the same way. So, yeah, it's very positive.
