PORTLAND CLASSIC

August 1, 2024

Dewi Weber

Portland, Oregon, USA

Columbia Edgewater Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. All right, here after the first round of the Portland Classic. Solid 6-under today to start this tournament. Just talk about how you played out there.

DEWI WEBER: Honestly, first nine was not great; was actually really bad.

But I had good short game so I put myself in really crafty positions and then my short game kind of saved me. I think that gave me weirdly enough a bit of momentum.

Even on like 10, hit a bad drive, had to chip out, and then made a really good save basically from where it was.

11 I finally started to hit it a little bit closer and then made the putt.

Same thing kind of happened the next hole.

And then on 4 I finally hit a good shot and I made the putt. Then I kind of just kept going like that.

Like I got in a really good rhythm with my putter and my swing started to get a little bit better every time. Yeah, all of a sudden we were 6-under.

Q. Talk about when you have those days, too, where you come out not quite clicking like you want to, how do you keep steady to move your way up the leaderboard and post a good round?

DEWI WEBER: Honestly, like I'm not really an expert in that. That's something like I have been working on, working with my mental coach.

For me today it was just kind of like, all right, it's not going the way I want it to. Luckily my short game is good. As cliche it's sounds, just take it one step at a time, try and fix my swing in the middle of the course, which is never a fun thing to do.

But as poorly as I was hitting it, just committing to those target lines, committing to those shots, instead of trying to forcing the ball somewhere.

As I kept doing that, which for me is like kind of a mental battle, I started to get a little bit better and better and better, and all of a sudden I was hitting it fine.

On 8 and 9, I just hit good shots which was nice. For me it was like I just kept telling myself, all right, onto the next. Let's make up and down from a here. Let's commit to this. Just very cliche, but shot by shot.

Q. It works, right?

DEWI WEBER: Yeah.

Q. And anything you want to work on now that you kind of wrapped? You adjusted obviously. Anything you're going to go work on?

DEWI WEBER: Yeah, I'm going to the range and hit a few shots and try to find that feel that I want to play with tomorrow. Like I said, I kind of found something towards the end but I just want to rep that a little bit, 20, 30 minutes or so, and roll some putts, just keeping that rhythm going.

Honestly, that's it for me today.

Q. Get some food probably.

DEWI WEBER: Yeah.

Q. Talk about some of the highlights of this course, too, for people that aren't the here and aren't able to see what the layout is.

DEWI WEBER: Yeah, so this is my third year here, and I've always loved this course. I love Portland, but the course is just fun. It suits me, too. I mean, go figure.

It's tight but it's fair. I feel like key on this course is picking your target lines and commit. The second you're hesitant over shots you're kind of gone. The trees are very much in play.

The course has always been in good condition, but the course this year is so pure. It's such a treat to play out here. The greens I think will firm up a bit towards the end of the week. They're a bit soft right now, which I think is why you're seeing such low scores.

The turf it is so good. Everything throughout the course is really, really solid conditions which as players like obviously we enjoy it.

Q. And off the course I've seen some exciting things. You recently got married. Congratulations.

DEWI WEBER: Thank you.

Q. How awesome was that whole experience and getting back into the work grind?

DEWI WEBER: No, it was amazing. It was very stressful I think the week leading up, but so worth it. I thought I was going to have fun, but I didn't think I was going to have that much fun.

It was a perfect day. We had our closest friends and obviously our immediate family there. It was so fun.
