THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 3, 2024

Jannik Sinner

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. SINNER/M. Berrettini

7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. The match had it all from start to finish. As it progressed, the crowd really wanted a fifth set and was trying to push Berrettini forward. How do you manage your own game and your emotions and composure to close it out in four sets?

JANNIK SINNER: It was a tough match. I think we both played really well. He was serving very, very well, and also me, especially the first two sets. Then I make a couple of mistakes in the beginning of the third set, and after his confidence started to grow a little bit more.

Overall it has been a very good match from both sides, and happy to close it out in four. Yeah, let's see what's coming in the next round.

Q. You played really, really good tiebreaks. I was curious why you think you were able to produce your best in the decisive moments there.

JANNIK SINNER: These moments come and go a little bit both ways. I think out of three tiebreaks, twice he was up a mini-break, which I got back straight away.

The small momentum can change quite fast. I served quite well in the tiebreaker. I guessed a little bit right also on the returns. These small details against Matteo, such an incredible server and player on grass, only the small details can make the difference.

Happy to see him back playing, playing this level again. Yeah, hope to see him around as much as we can.

Q. When you play a server as good as Matteo, how do you think about your return position, and how did you think about changing it at certain moments in the match?

JANNIK SINNER: On grass it's a little bit tougher to change the position because, you know, the ball slips away a little bit more. So, you know, I think it's a little bit easier in the second serve, which I tried sometimes to mix it up, but it's difficult.

Servers like Matteo, one of the best serves we have on tour and especially on grass, it's tough to return. Yeah, it's also a little bit a gut feeling, no, which can help you, and you just have to go for it.

Q. A lot of players slide on hard courts, but not many do it on grass. You do it. How was it something that you decided like you were capable of doing and that you could do without injuring yourself?

JANNIK SINNER: I don't know. In the first years when I played, I never tried to slide. Then at some point I realized that sometimes it can help. It doesn't have to help you always, but sometimes it can help you also to recover in the court after the shot.

It depends also a bit of the conditions. If it's a little bit more wet or dryer, you know, you have to be careful, but it's one part of my game what I have improved for sure. I feel like I can still improve the movement on grass, but overall I feel much better every year where I play on.

Q. Novak has said that his sliding comes from skiing. Curious if that's something for you that it comes from?

JANNIK SINNER: That can be also a little bit the confidence to go for it and just slide. Yeah, you just have to let go of your body a little bit and also with your mind. It can help, skiing, yeah.

Q. Sometimes you are using your racquet on the ground to help you gain balance or change direction. I was wondering if that has any connection to skiing also or if that's just something...

JANNIK SINNER: No, this is something what I don't even control. It's natural for me. Sometimes I push myself a little bit away trying to gain a little bit more of court coverage a little bit faster, but it's something what I don't even think about.
