THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 5, 2024

Jasmine Paolini

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

J. PAOLINI/B. Andreescu

7-6, 6-1

THE MODERATOR: Jasmine, great win today. You must be feeling very good.

JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, I'm feeling really good. I think I played a really good match. Yeah, was not easy. She's a great player, a Grand Slam champion. So I'm really happy.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You haven't dropped a set yet on the grass. How are you feeling, and if you feel that your game matches up well on the surface?

JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, at the moment I'm feeling good. Every match, it's different. But I think I played really good three matches, especially the second and the third one. The first one I think I was a little bit more nervous.

But I'm just thinking to try to play point by point. So it went well. I won all the sets. But it's not easy. It's not every time like this I think, you know?

Q. On Madison Keys, your thoughts on that match?

JASMINE PAOLINI: It's going to be tough. I think last year I did two games or three against her in Dubai. But I hope it's going to be a different match.

I practice with her in Eastbourne once. Yeah, I don't know. Looking forward for this match. I hope to play a good match and we see.

Q. When would the first time you played on grass be? What were your memories of that?

JASMINE PAOLINI: I don't know. The first time I qualify for Wimbledon, for the quallies.

Yeah, was a really weird relationship with grass I think. I remember I won with Sabalenka in 60K or 50K, I don't know, in Italy. I said, Oh, maybe I can play here (smiling).

But then the year after that win, I played not so well. I was like, I don't know if I can play well here. My coach was telling to me, Look, you can play well here. But I wasn't believing it.

Yeah, now I am enjoying. I think it's nice to play on grass. I play a good week last week in Eastbourne. Yeah, I'm feeling good at the moment.

Q. During this tournament, when you're not playing, what sort of things do you like to do, places you like to go?

JASMINE PAOLINI: You know, yesterday I play doubles so I stayed all the day at the club because we are waiting until late.

But, yeah, I think I go to our house and just relax. It's not stuff too complicated, just relaxing, yeah.

Q. You mentioned it would be a tough match against Madison Keys. How would you describe her style and your style and what the keys to the match would be?

JASMINE PAOLINI: She's an aggressive player, for sure. She serve very fast. I think she's one of the best hitters in the tour because I love how she plays, how she hit the ball.

The keys for the match I think are always the same: try to serve well and to control the point. Also, of course, to return as much as possible and as better as possible. Yeah, try to control the point.

I think that's the key, especially here on grass.

Q. You're the first Italian woman to reach the fourth round in each of the first three Grand Slams of a year. How proud does that make you?

JASMINE PAOLINI: It's strange. When I was watching the girls that were winning slams, making finals, I felt like they were so far from me, you know? Yeah, it's something that of course I'm proud of, but it sounds strange a little bit.

Yeah, I'm happy about this achievement, of course.

Q. Which of the greats that you're talking about that you watched?

JASMINE PAOLINI: Flavia Pennetta, Schiavone, Errani, and Vinci, I think. Yeah, they played an amazing level for many years. It's great to have this achievement. I'm trying to live my own journey. It's something that I'm proud of, but for myself, not comparing to the past, the others.

Q. Your volleying was really key today. A few years ago you hardly came to the net. Today you were coming forward whenever you could.

JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, I'm enjoying.

Q. Can you talk about how you learned to enjoy it and how important playing doubles with Sara was important for that.

JASMINE PAOLINI: It is so important. We are dedicating so much I think time and effort for doubles, me and Sara, but also my coach, trying to be better also in doubles. I think it help me a lot.

Yeah, I can say I feel a little bit more relaxed when I'm next to the net. I have to be always worried about because you never know (smiling).

But yeah, I'm feeling a little bit better.

Q. In Paris you said a lot about dreaming, you have to learn to dream. Now here you're playing like never before. What is your dream now?

JASMINE PAOLINI: I think playing in those stadium like two days in a row in stadium 1, it's already a dream for me. I never thought I could play two times in a row in that court. To get two wins, it's unbelievable. I'm very grateful for that.

I don't know. I'm taking day by day. Next match is going to be tough. I'm in the second week. I'm so happy about it. I hope to keep playing at this level.

Q. Did you analyze the final with Iga Swiatek for a long time?

JASMINE PAOLINI: Yes, I mean, was really tough match. It's tough to analyze because she was playing a really high level, I think. In that moment was tough to do something else to put some pressure on her because she was playing unbelievable.

We analyze. We try also to keep moving forward, to try to think about grass, because it's other challenge, other tournament.

Yeah, of course I think that match, it help me a lot. I hope it's going to help me, you know? But, yeah, was tough. Was a tough match.

Q. You seem to smile a lot out on court. Sometimes when you lose points you're smiling. How do you stay so positive?

JASMINE PAOLINI: I know, I have to take it easy sometimes. The first time I smile today, I did a dropshot that it didn't arrive at the net. I was like, Mamma mia. That was bad shot.

Try to cancel what it happened and try to focus on the next point. Also try to feel relaxed. Yeah, that's important for me I think.
