KPMG WOMEN'S PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

June 20, 2024

Madelene Sagstrom

Sammamish, Washington, USA

Sahalee Country Club

TV

Q. Posting on Instagram earlier this week. Couldn't wait to get out here on this beautiful course. How did Sahalee meet your expectations today?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: It's fantastic. I mean, I haven't played here before. I wasn't here in '16, so just coming out here on Tuesday, I was like, wow, it's gorgeous. Reminds me nothing of Sweden, but it's just beautiful. The weather is perfect. So I couldn't ask for anything else.

Q. As beautiful as it is, it's pretty tough, too. You told me a minute ago your strategy was just hit and hope. What is your actual strategy out there?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I think it actually gets quite simple because there is no bail-out here. Like you can't bail-out. You have to commit to a good shot and you have to kind of fight those demons. I mean, there is no left or right here. It's fairway or nothing.

Even if you're in the fairway sometimes it's not great. So I think it actually eases it up a bit that you know you have to hit good golf shots. And then it's more about pulling them off.

But my game has felt good. I might sometimes get in my own way. I think this actually helps me quite a bit because it's very straightforward what you have to do.

Q. We've seen some sparks from you at other points this season, especially at the Cognizant Founders Cup. What's the missing piece you're hoping might fall into place here this week?

MADELENE SAGSTROM: I think if I keep the ball in play and hit my irons fairly good -- I putted really well today. Putting is definitely my strong part of my game.

So I think for me, it's about giving myself opportunities. I fight with my swing sometimes. I fight a little bit of a dropping on the plane and I think that stuff definitely -- that will hurt my swing.

So today I'm trying to hit a low fade, slow fade, slow fades, but they're flying really straight and they're really nice. I think just knowing my tendencies and trying to stay with it, not give up on myself out there.

It's hard. It's hard to play majors. It's hard to play good golf. Just giving myself opportunities.
