QATAR TOTAL ENERGIES OPEN

February 14, 2024

Iga Swiatek

Doha, Qatar

Press Conference

I. SWIATEK/E. Alexandrova

6-1, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Iga, a great performance tonight to get back into the quarterfinals. Can you just talk about not only your performance but that second set against Alexandrova that was pretty tight tonight.

IGA SWIATEK: Yeah, for sure it was tighter than the first one, but I'm happy that I closed it. You know, still pretty solid, because I broke her, you know, in the middle of the set, so I went to kind of switch the momentum and I'm happy that it worked.

For sure, it was another solid match, so I'm happy.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Of course you have been one of the, maybe the most consistent player in the WTA for the past couple of years, but in this tournament, Coco has lost already and Ons, of course she has some issue on the knee but she already lost. Do you think there is any, like, specific reason of top players losing this early round of this tournament?

IGA SWIATEK: I mean, everybody has a different story, so I don't know. I would have to kind of, like, analyze the overall rhythm of the tour, which really makes no sense because we are all individuals. Sometimes we'll play good; sometimes we'll play bad.

Yeah, it happens. You know, I don't know how to answer that, because obviously anybody can lose any match. There are many players that are, you know, lower ranked and they are playing great tennis suddenly and they can win against the top players.

I would say it's just, you know, there are players that are consistent and dominant, but there are also players that are trying to, I don't know, win those important matches and they do.

I mean, I played couple of practices against Siniakova and she can play great tennis. I mean, it's not like they had bad opponents, you know. Same with me in Australia, like, it just happens that sometimes you lose. That's all.

Q. What do you think is the key for you, this consistency?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, I would say I'm just working hard to work on things that I have influence on. Usually I do everything that I could, and I have really no regrets after matches, because I know I'm working hard and I'm doing everything.

So sometimes maybe because of that it's easier to switch back the momentum, or when you fight till the end, you'll have more chances that the match may go your way at the end.

But, you know, I guess any top player will fight because there is a reason why we're at the top. So I'm not sure, but that's the only thing I know about myself and I'm trying to do that.

Q. Potential next matchup, I think just Vika took first set maybe, but can you talk about both these potential, your next-round opponent?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, whoever wins it's going to be tough. Vika is really experienced player and she won here twice already. Yeah, she's really experienced. For sure she's gonna use it. We played last time, you know, long time ago, so for sure I need to analyze and everything.

Against Jelena, I always have a tough battle. Whoever I play I'm going to be kind of motivated to just do my work and we'll see. I will do my best.

Q. As you said, Ostapenko is kind of like tough player for you. What do you think makes her tough for you?

IGA SWIATEK: Well, there is no point talking about it right now. I spoke a lot on US Open, so let's leave it at that. I have another match to focus on, so I'm not going to come back to that.
