Quick Quotes
Q. All right, Angel Yin, excellent third round of 7-under par 65. You bogeyed the first hole today, and at the time you were six shots behind.
ANGEL YIN: Yeah.
Q. Eight birdies later and you tie for the lead. Excellent round.
ANGEL YIN: Time makes everything better. That's all I can say.
Q. Well you've had an excellent 2023. Four Top 10s, runner-up at Chevron, moved up over 100 spots in the Rolex Rankings. What's been the recipe for success this year?
ANGEL YIN: Be healthier, swinging better. So just like fixing my swing, going back to where it was before my injury, because after the injury my swing really changed. It's still a little bit unstable, but it's a lot better.
Honestly, just a lot more confidence on the golf course, and I think that's what is helping me play well this year.
Q. Speaking of confidence, Maja Stark and Danielle Kang have both spoken about how much playing in the Solheim Cup boosted their confidence. You played three, including a few weeks ago in Spain. Do you echo their sentiments?
ANGEL YIN: Who said that? What?
Q. Danielle Kang.
ANGEL YIN: Oh, Danielle Kang, yes, I echo what they said. I mean, the Solheim Cup is special. Nothing like that. Unfortunately we didn't have a full crowd, but there was so many people. Everywhere is packed. With Finca being so hilly on the side of the hill it was packed where every inch of the crowned was filled.
Q. It's going to be a very bunched leaderboard going into tomorrow. We know you have a very vibrant personality and enjoy having fun on the golf course. How much will you lean on that being in contention tomorrow?
ANGEL YIN: I'm just going to be like Wednesday and just be dull. I'm going to do the -- just kidding. I'm just going to play golf. It is what it is. I've been in the final group a few times this year. I'm not really going to expect much.
Just going to play golf, and if it works out, I'm going to be hoisting a trophy. If it doesn't, maybe going to impossible to Jay Chou's concert if my friends pull through. If not, sitting in my hotel room.
Q. So bogey at the first. What did you do to yourself to really just reset, refocus, and pretend that hole didn't really exist?
ANGEL YIN: I yelled at my caddie. I actually did. I kind of like -- I wasn't like yelling at him, but I was like, I think our communication is a not great. Okay, we're going to work on it. Then we just like did it.
I think the perk about having Marcus on my bag is that I can just be as direct as I want and he doesn't take that personal. It's just work. We just stick to facts and we improve on that and I think that really helps.
So off to a bad start. Three-putted the first hole. Club was a little bit iffy, and then I had a really long putt and three-putted that one. Then I bounced back with a birdie on 3.
Really helped us have a good start into like the first six holes, and then not losing shot is always good. This course isn't like -- it's very gettable, and so the scores are going to be low.
Q. When did it feel like it was clicking for you today on this moving day? You had quite a few birdies after that bogey there.
ANGEL YIN: I mean, I just knew I was hitting it good. I'm hitting it okay. Everything is okay. So I know I just need to stick to that. Like yesterday showed me that I left really blatant four strokes out there. I was like, okay, conditions were tough. I got the game.
I mean, yesterday I wasn't really far off, 3-under, so if I left four, that means seven, so I was like, okay, I'm just going to play. That was it.
Q. And then on top of that, being able to kind of walk off 18 with the clubhouse lead, like you said earlier, you've been in the final group a couple times this year. You've been rebuilding your confidence as you've worked on your swing. What do you draw on in these big time moments?
ANGEL YIN: My golf game honestly. I think what happens is I live so much in my head, and what can happen is living so much in the head, especially when you're in the final group, it gets really difficult.
Dude, her dad is so cool. I want to meet her dad.
Sorry, sorry.
So, yeah, so I'm just going to try to live in the moment, what's in front of me, and try to hit my shots and stop living in my own head and overthinking everything. And then if it works out, it works out, because golf is difficult, because it could be just like tomorrow is like today, you know, but we put an end to it.
Q. I also want to ask because you just played alongside her at Solheim Cup, but Lexi Thompson showing up and out at the PGA TOUR. Were you able to catch any highlights, and what did it mean to see your Solheim Cup member and friend get out among the men?
ANGEL YIN: So one of three women to ever be under par at a PGA TOUR event, I mean, that's really special, especially with how Lexi performed at the Solheim. It was incredible.
I mean, she was one of our ringers because we got a lot of ringers. Everyone is a ringer. But Lexi, she has a lot of drive and spirit. Like it's just a very driven passion. That's the word, yes.
I'm really happy for her. Happy that she got the opportunity and I'm happy she did so well, too, and she showed up. I think it's just going to be one of many.
