Quick Quotes
Q. Gordon, talk through that match. It was fun out there, off to a good start and held on?
GORDON SARGENT: Yeah. Dylan I know was a little nervous over that first tee shot. He kind of striped it, and of course I was in a divot here. But no, we played well, made a few mistakes on the front, hitting it in bunkers, but other than that we kind of just stayed out of trouble. Made a few putts coming in. Again, just kind of kept the pedal down when we got up.
DYLAN MENANTE: Yeah, foursomes is hard to really go low because you can't really get in that much of a groove, but we definitely found the groove in the beginning. I made a couple good putts, and we kind of made what we had. Definitely I made a mistake on the par-5 with that bunker shot. Definitely could have rewrote that hole, but besides that, we played really well.
Q. How fun was it just to play foursomes? I know you practised it, but how cool was it when it actually mattered?
DYLAN MENANTE: Yeah, it's unbelievable. My legs were shaking on the first tee shot, so I was like, just please go left like it's supposed to. Yeah, it was really fun.
GORDON SARGENT: Yeah, it was fun. Just kind of makes you be really disciplined out there, and that's kind of what we worked on all week, and it's nice to see it pay off today.
Q. How important was it to get a point on the board for the U.S. right off the bat here?
GORDON SARGENT: Yeah, obviously going out first, you want to keep the momentum and hopefully get the guys behind us rolling after us. It was huge, and pretty happy with how we played.
DYLAN MENANTE: Yeah, I usually always go first. It's really big to put a point on the board first and just show everyone else you can do it, and we're going to keep fighting until the end. I mean, in foursomes, in history we haven't won per se, but this year hopefully make a difference.
Q. Dylan, what makes you and Gordon such a good team? Is he just the only one that can keep up with you?
DYLAN MENANTE: I mean, not only can he keep up with me, but he hits it 350, so there's not much to not like.
Q. Did you guys philosophically talk in the team room that you guys were going off first and needed to get the first point? Was that an emphasis at all with McCoy or no?
GORDON SARGENT: It was more like we're both pretty quick players and we wanted to go set the tone. We obviously feel comfortable playing with each other. We've kind of done it a lot, especially in practice sessions. We kind of wanted to go first and just kind of lead the team.
Q. Which holes were you in bunkers, 2 --
DYLAN MENANTE: I drove it in the bunker on 2 and then we just made a mess of 5. Kind of got unlucky and then compounded errors. But thankfully match play it's only one shot. Yeah, other than that, we played pretty well the last however many holes.
Q. Did you guys get a sense they were trying to slow down a little bit there because you guys were quick? Seemed like they were kind of in your face early, then as the match went --
GORDON SARGENT: I feel like for us if we stick to our game plan and play fast when it's our turn, just kind of not focus on what they're doing, and we know that if we go out and play how we want to, we'll be where we want to be.
Q. Obviously the game plan isn't to be 3-1 down after foursomes, but right now that's what it would be. What's your thought about that going into singles which is obviously where better players usually make up the strokes?
DYLAN MENANTE: I don't think it's different than if we were up 4-0. We're just going to go play the golf we can and see what happens.
Q. Dylan, were you the only guy on the team to try haggis earlier this week?
DYLAN MENANTE: I think so.
Q. How would you describe it?
DYLAN MENANTE: Terrible. Salty and just keeps compounding in your mouth. The flavour just doesn't go away.
Q. Is it still in there?
DYLAN MENANTE: No, it's gone. I washed it with a couple waters.
