JOHN DEERE CLASSIC

July 7, 2023

Lucas Glover

Silvis, Illinois, USA

TPC Deere Run

Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Lucas, obviously back and near to a place near and dear to you, having won here a few years ago. How much of a factor is that to a round like today?

LUCAS GLOVER: A lot. You always feel good driving into a place where you've had success, whether it was a win or a good finish or just a good feeling.

So love the course and always loved coming here, so nice to play well.

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. What was working out there this morning?

LUCAS GLOVER: Putted well. Hit a couple of wedges close and made a bunch of putts. It was just solid, but I putted really well.

Q. Does that have a lot to do with the change you made at putter?

LUCAS GLOVER: For sure. For sure. Got some confidence in that. You know, confident on the short ones so you can be a little more aggressive on the longer ones, and that just breeds confidence.

Last week and coming into this week, just finally feel good with something, yes.

Q. When you play as well as you did today, what do you do to work on that to make sure you can replicate that for the weekend as well?

LUCAS GLOVER: Well, late yesterday and early today, so probably a little bit of rest this afternoon. I like where my game is, so just maybe some short game and just some rest this afternoon.

Nothing too crazy. Got to get some rest. It was a quick turnaround last night.

Q. You entered this week 130th in the FedEx Cup rankings, and a really good finish could maybe get you inside the top 70 or at least very close to it, within striking distance. Has that been weighing on your mind at all with these last few tournaments this year, this kind of closing stretch? It's desperation time for a lot of guys to make that push.

LUCAS GLOVER: Not really. Until now I wasn't even in position to pay attention, I had been playing so poorly. But after a good finish last week and seeing some putts go in finally and continuing that this week, yeah, I mean, I like the way I'm trending anyway.

Q. You've seen this course in a lot of different playing conditions. Describe this morning's conditions for us. Was it about as easy as it could have been?

LUCAS GLOVER: Yeah, it was pretty perfect. The golf course is in perfect shape, and then when you get pretty calm conditions on a perfectly manicured course with somewhat soft greens, the scores are going to be low, and that's what we're seeing.

Luckily that was kind of the case yesterday as well. Then some wind yesterday afternoon, but that's expected.

Yeah, the golf course is perfect. The greens are perfect. They're receptive. The scores are always going to be low when you have that.

Q. What was the putting change?

LUCAS GLOVER: I went to a long kind of chest-style broomstick, whatever you want to call it, a la Adam Scott is the best way I know to describe it. Not all the way up like Bernard, but kind of middle like Adam.

Q. Last week, this week this Lucas Glover resurgence, when did the momentum finishing strong yesterday mean to you carrying into today?

LUCAS GLOVER: Yeah, on a quick turnaround it's always nice to have some momentum. Birdieing a couple coming in last night, and then we always say it makes dinner taste good.

But also if you are early the next day, it gives you -- you know, you wake up and it's easier to get out of bed at 4:00 when you just made a couple of birdies the night before. Yeah, then you just want to pile on a good finish and keep it going.

Q. Piling on is the key here as you know.

LUCAS GLOVER: I'm sorry?

Q. Piling on birdies is --

LUCAS GLOVER: You have to make a bunch, and it looks like the weather is going to be beautiful this weekend. Golf course shouldn't change much, so yeah, it's going to be a birdie fest, and that's fun.

Q. Talk about the par save, that putt on 9 and how that can help you for this weekend.

LUCAS GLOVER: Yeah, I'm going to be considerably far back starting tomorrow, I would assume, and then it's just one less that I got to overcome.

Similar to last night, birdie 18, make dinner taste good. Make that putt on 9, makes lunch taste good. Otherwise, it would be pretty miserable.

But middle of the fairway there and come off with a 5, that was a big save.

Q. What was the approach into the green? What happened?

LUCAS GLOVER: About 196, 6-iron. Just pushed it. It was the right club to get it behind that hole and putt down the hill a little bit, but I missed my spot five yards right, and then it just runs through because it gets short on that right side.

Q. It looked like it was a very easy round for you, an easy 6-under today.

LUCAS GLOVER: Yeah, it was. Yesterday was a hard 2-under. Today was one of those, when I get back and reflect on it, it will be as high as I could have shot. I misread a short one on 17 for birdie on that one and then a pretty silly bogey on 7.

As difficult a 69 yesterday, it was equally as easy a 65 today. That would be how I would describe it.
