Press Conference
I. SWIATEK/P. Martic
6-2, 7-5
THE MODERATOR: Welcome to Iga Swiatek's press conference.
Questions for Iga.
Q. As you said, it's not your most familiar or favorite surface. Three pretty efficient wins in a row. How would you assess your level of confidence at this point and your level of comfort, especially compared to other years?
IGA SWIATEK: Oh, well, for sure it's a tournament where I feel most comfortable in terms of playing on grass. I feel like I can really use my experience from previous years and add what I practiced before this tournament.
Yeah, I feel confident and I feel like I can play with more intuition, play my game a little bit more, yeah.
Q. Would you say that's probably your best win on grass?
IGA SWIATEK: Oh, it's hard to compare honestly. There's, like, too many factors. When you look at all these matches, it's kind of hard to judge because it also depends on your opponent. Every day is different. You have different challenges sometimes. If the match is tougher, and you overcome that, you can also be happy with that.
So it's hard to just, like, point one match, I would say.
Q. It was Centre Court against someone very good on grass. In this country we would call it banana skin, where the favorite is going to fail, but you came through it really, really well.
IGA SWIATEK: Thank you. But that doesn't change the fact that it's pretty hard to judge.
But I'm happy that I'm playing solid game and I have few matches already that I won on Centre Court, as well, because it's a little bit different. You can feel the vibe.
I'll try to keep it going.
Q. Last year you lost in the third round. How does it enter your mind, especially towards the end of the second set?
IGA SWIATEK: Honestly I'm not coming back to last year, especially with the fact that we don't have to, like, defend points. I feel like last year was, I don't know, a little bit different, especially coming back after winning Roland Garros. It wasn't, like, the easiest moment for me.
I try really not to come back to that. I'm just taking experience from just this period of time of playing on grass, and that's all. It's just a totally different chapter, so yeah.
Q. Are you able to feel a bit more relaxed at this tournament knowing that you're still kind of learning the ropes of grass? Enjoying the challenge?
IGA SWIATEK: I do feel more relaxed. I think also because I won Roland Garros and I feel like after that the pressure is a little bit off because I reached my goal kind of for the season. I don't have to think about anything else other than playing.
But on the other hand you may say the same about last year. But this time is a little bit different because I feel like I have more kind of, I don't know, free space in my head to develop my game and to work on my skills on grass.
Overall, yeah, I feel more relaxed.
Q. Are you staying in a house?
IGA SWIATEK: In a house.
Q. How are you finding that? What is that like compared to normal life on tour?
IGA SWIATEK: I like it. I feel like we're getting along with the team pretty well, so it's nice to have something different on tour.
But sometimes I'm also staying in apartments in different cities because I don't want to, like, stay in hotels all the time. It feels more homey when you're kind of mixing it up.
For sure house is best option because the hotels are like 40 minutes away. It's nice to stay around the courts.
Q. You made the fourth round in 2021 here. How much would it mean for you to make the next step and get through to the quarterfinals?
IGA SWIATEK: Honestly, I can kind of repeat my answer. It doesn't really matter for me, especially when it was like two years ago and a lot has happened since then.
But, well, my goal is to kind of win any match, no matter if I'm improving my previous results or whatever. I'm going to have the same level of focus and the same determination.
Q. Do you even know who you're playing next?
IGA SWIATEK: Belinda Bencic.
Q. When did you find out? Were you looking ahead at all?
IGA SWIATEK: Well, post-match interview, yeah.
