THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

July 6, 2023

Jan Choinski

Wimbledon, London, UK

Press Conference

H. HURKACZ/J. Choinski

6-4, 6-4, 7-6

THE MODERATOR: Your thoughts on today's match.

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, I mean, I felt like I was playing good tennis. The match was very competitive. We played over two hours. You know, I think the first two sets were decided each by one break.

Yeah, I tried my best. You know, unlucky that I got broken twice in set No. 1 and set 2 at 4-All. Then in third set when I had the three set points, you know, sad about not making those, but that's tennis. That's life. Then, you know, I'm happy the way I performed today.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Although you lost today, how would you reflect on the last few days, the experience overall?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, I mean, I couldn't thank the people more that gave me the opportunity to play in this tournament. I feel like, you know, it has to do with a lot of trust, as well, trusting me that I've got the level to compete at this level. Yeah, just want to say huge thanks.

You know, I have learnt a lot during the past couple of days. I think just going to take out all the positive bits, and also super happy about winning my first Grand Slam match.

Q. Do you feel like you have proved that you can play on this stage?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yes, I think so. I mean, I played a very good first match.

I kept it as close as possible. Also, you know, having chances to win a set off a guy that's top 20, previously been top 10 in the world, played semifinals here as well, ended Roger's career at Wimbledon.

It doesn't get much better than his level in terms of tennis and grass court tennis. He's shown in the past that he's a great grass court player. Keeping the match quite close and having my chances to take a set off him, as well, is just positive.

Q. So you've got a taste for more to come back next year?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, sure. I would be very happy coming back next year. Maybe, you know, even without needing a wild card for the main draw, try my best to get my ranking to a position where I can enter the tournament by myself.

Q. Is it nice you've really gotten your name out there? Seems like people have gotten to know you off the court as well. I've seen articles today about your parents, ballerina parents, how many calories you eat. Has that been nice to get more fans as well?

JAN CHOINSKI: Yeah, for sure. We've been working hard for many, many years. Especially after my injuries to get to a point to compete at a good level. Thinking about it, you know, last year I was like 680 or something, struggling to even make it into futures, you know, to get some points, because my ranking was just dropping. I couldn't compete because of my injuries.

Then, you know, I just took the opportunity at the first future I think in summer or something, which I won. Then from then on we just carried on, we played so many matches to just get the ranking to a point where I can easily play challengers again. Then from then on, always trying to get into higher level of tennis, playing 250s, playing some qualifiers of the bigger tournaments.

Now, you know, playing, if not "the" most important tennis tournament in the world, is just, you know, we've come a far way. I hope it doesn't stop here. I hope we just continue rising in the rankings and making, bringing out my name even more.
