BETFRED BRITISH MASTERS HOSTED BY SIR NICK FALDO

June 30, 2023

John Gough

Sutton, Coldfield, England

The Belfry Hotel & Resort

Quick Quotes

JOHN GOUGH: Yeah it was tricky today with the wind picking up and swirling, but it was the same for everyone out there this afternoon. I probably didn't hit it my best but that just bodes well for me going into the next few days.

I feel a bit of confidence in that knowing that the next few days, could get some even better scores scoring but you never know. I holed a few good par saves and a good bogey at one point on 8.

Looking forward to playing the weekend in DP Tour golf. Obviously there are some of the best golfers in there world here. It's an honour to be here and to play beside them and to compete with them is more than I can imagine this week but overall delighted with the last two days.

Q. A good bogey as you say on 8, and an even better par save on 9. How important is that to take momentum into the weekend?

JOHN GOUGH: Of course. Hole a putt on the last is always nice. I managed to do it on 9 and 18 today, so both of the finishing holes. But yeah, I think it's obviously nice looking forward, rolling off in a nice putt like that.

But I do need to iron out some of the smaller mistakes that were happening and causing me to make the saves. But I'm just nitpicking here and I'm buzzing. I'm delighted to be here, so happy.

Q. The only amateur in the field here this week. Can you give us insight into your history of golf?

JOHN GOUGH: Yeah, played golf as soon as I could walk pretty much, and then my dad, my brother is a great golfer. My dad likes to say he's a great golfer but we are competitive family and played up through junior golf in England, really all around the world and then I went to college for five years and during COVID in Charlotte so I think that's where I really improved my game the most over there.

Then the last two years since I've come back, I've been playing very solid golf. Got a good few titles under my belt in the amateur game. It's nice going forward into this potentially most likely being my last amateur year, and I can't think everyone enough for the invites and to get me in here in the first place. But yeah, it's just surreal being last year, but happy. I've got to pinch myself, and still need to compete and it's still a golf tournament. It's not just a laugh.
