BETFRED BRITISH MASTERS HOSTED BY SIR NICK FALDO

June 29, 2023

John Gough

Sutton, Coldfield, England

The Belfry Hotel & Resort

Quick Quotes

Q. 4-under today, you must be really pleased with how things have gone, considering the start, great recovery?

JOHN GOUGH: Yeah, unfortunately got into a common trend of starting a bit slow in my hurts. But being able to bounce back on 3 was nice. I made a nice up-and-down on 2, a really nice up-and-down on 2.

So it could have been a lot worse from the get-go but I think hopefully, 72-hole tournament, so you can't let two holes get in the way of that. Overall pretty happy with today. Obviously there's a lot more work to be done next few days, so yeah, as a start goes in the end, that's pretty nice.

Q. How are you finding the experience so far?

JOHN GOUGH: It's great seeing a lot of guys I played with in the amateur game ask there's a lot of big names here, as well, which is nice. Getting treated great is great. It's a lot nicer coming to events, professional events, when you get a few days of practise rounds, rather than cramming it all into one or two days.

But the course, everyone, it's all great, well-run, so I'm looking forward to finishing the week off well.

Q. And you've had a lot of success in your career so far. How important is it being able to draw on that when you do get opportunities like these on a professional level?

JOHN GOUGH: Of course, it's very important to be able to take the chances because there is thousands of fantastic golfers out in the world, and they are all dying for spots, whether it be pros or amateurs, they are all dying for starts and potential chances to showcase themselves, so I feel like for not only for yourself but for the rest of the great golfers out there, you need to take your chances when you can.

Q. And you have Walker Cup on the horizon, and planning to turn pro after that?

JOHN GOUGH: Yeah, obviously looking forward to that. Team golf is a completely different game altogether but hopefully we get in that and go well and finish my amateur career off pretty nicely hopefully.
