TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP

June 23, 2023

Lucas Herbert

Cromwell, Connecticut, USA

TPC River Highlands

Quick Quotes

Q. Solid second round. How we feeling heading into the weekend?

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, good. I'd have taken 9-under through two rounds if you offered me that at the start of the week.

I think going through a bit of a rough patch with the game, so feel like I got those results out there and I'm pretty happy with that.

Q. What confidence are you seeing in your game? What areas?

LUCAS HERBERT: I mean, I found a little something with my putter yesterday morning before the round. That's really helped. I've putted great the last two days.

To be honest, I didn't have a lot of confidence in my game. Literally out here trying to enjoy myself a bit.

Yeah, feel like it's been a bit of a rough stretch the last few weeks. Just feeling a bit defeated on the course.

So I know I've been doing the right things and just trying to enjoy myself out there and probably not take it too seriously.

Q. Over the halfway mark on the season. How would you define the season so far? You found success with the win in Japan.

LUCAS HERBERT: Yeah, it's kind of a tale of like two different tours. I'm playing great in Europe and had a garbage season on the PGA TOUR.

Just didn't got the results that I wanted. Haven't been able to capitalize on results when I got myself into a decent position to do that.

Yeah, just I'm 150 odd on the FedExCup and not even close to where I want to be. It's, yeah, been tough to sort of deal with that and just managing my emotions and expectations.

But it's just a new challenge of the PGA TOUR. This is my second full season on the PGA TOUR, so it's just a new challenge of figuring out how to play out here, how to beat these guys, play these golf courses better than them.

And, yeah, I think when I do get better results it's going to feel even better because I have gone through this struggle.

Q. Last time you played here on a sponsor exemption.

LUCAS HERBERT: Monday qualified.

Q. Monday qualified. What do you like about this course and tournament?

LUCAS HERBERT: There is a score out there if you play well, putt well. You can see why Jim Furyk shot 58 year. Some guys are shooting pretty low numbers. Denny shot 60 yesterday. You can see how it's done.

It's on a golf course where you're just like defending all day. It's tricky and quirky, the pins are in all these positions where it feel like a little local knowledge and like the members that have been here for 20 years know exactly where it breaks.

It's like when you come here once a year it's hard to get it right every time. So, yeah, I feel like it places a premium on holing putts which is when I'm playing well a strength of my game. So I've enjoyed that.

Q. Monday qualifying, then getting in here and not having to worry about that. But your approach to playing here, does it change from approaching through this path than automatically being in?

LUCAS HERBERT: I don't think they're the two factors that change your approach. I'm at very different stages in my career, and where my game feels like as well than where I was two years ago when I Monday qualified in.

I was playing great. I went an won the next week in Ireland. I cracked the top 50 in the world for the first time there. My game was in a great spot; it's not in a great spot right now.

So I don't know that your attitude or mindset really changes too much based on how you get into the tournament. Yeah, I would say they're very different circumstances to those things.
