Quick Quotes
Q. Got off to a hot start there. What was working so well for you early on and was it just golf that came the rest of the way?
SHANE LOWRY: Yeah, got off to a very hot start. I rolled in some lovely putts early on. You're not going to keep that going all day. I had a couple of slip ups, but, you know. Probably wasn't aggressive enough on 16. Made bogey there. Hit a couple of bad shots after that. You're going to make bogeys around this course after hitting bad shots. I said to my caddie walking there on 5 or 6 there, that just because I got off to a hot start, I feel like it's playing easy, and it's important not to get down on my self after making a few bogeys. 3-under's a pretty good score around here. I'm pretty happy with my start.
Q. Even after the hot start did you feel like the course was playing difficult? Obviously the scores are kind of showing it.
SHANE LOWRY: The wind got up a little bit. Got warmer and started to get firmer. You have to hit fairways. I missed a few fairways and it's -- you miss fairways you're struggling for pars. But if you hit fairways, the greens are so good that you can give yourself plenty of chances. But, yeah, it's just tricky out there.
Q. Rory talked about he only used four or five drivers in a round. What was your situation with driver?
SHANE LOWRY: Well he hits his 3-wood as far as my driver. So I hit my driver a little bit more often than he does. But like there's just a lot of holes where there's a 5- or 8-, 10-yard gap to hit it in and you just have to hit it. You have to man up and go for it. That's the way I played.
As the week gets on and it gets firmer and faster there will be a lot of 3-woods and 5-woods off the tee for me. But that's what this golf course is like. Today the 1st is driver because it's kind of slightly into the wind and playing a little bit longer, but as the week goes on it will probably be down to a 3-wood after.
Q. When you said 16 you weren't aggressive enough. I want to make sure we're talking about the 16th hole?
SHANE LOWRY: The 16th hole. I was 5-under through 6 and it was just a smelly hole. I just, I aimed it at the flag and I cut it off and into the bunker. My normal shot would be just left edge of the green there and just hit a hard cut 6-iron and I kind of just wasn't aggressive enough there. But, yeah, that's just how it goes.
