KITCHENAID SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 27, 2023

Steve Flesch

Frisco, Texas, USA

Quick Quotes

PGA Frisco

Q. What went really nice for you?

STEVE FLESCH: You know, I drove the ball well and I putted well. Didn't hit it close very often but I hit a lot of greens and I just kind of kept the ball in play really. I didn't take any -- the par-5s are just kind of out of my reach to really go for 'em in two, so kind of takes the stress off trying to hit a tee shot in out there on a lot of holes. So I just kind of laid up on the par-5s. Birdied two of 'em. Hit a lot of good shots on the par-3s. So I had a nice day out there today.

Q. What do you think of the golf course and the test?

STEVE FLESCH: It's pretty good. I don't get the tees, but that's another, I mean, I'm sure you've heard that.

Q. It's a common refrain.

STEVE FLESCH: Game's hard enough. At least give us a flat spot. Especially to tee a driver up on, right? But the par-5s are tough because like I kind of said at the beginning of the week, unless I really hit a big one out there I'm not even going to think about going for the green because it's not really risk/reward it's kind of like a risk/risk. Because I don't even know if I was in range to get to par-5s if I could keep the ball on the green. And then there's enough trouble around 'em where it isn't worth it to me. But be interesting to see when the big gorillas come and hit the bombs if they can keep it on the greens.

Q. Strick yesterday had 207 into the front at 18 and hit wedge, wedge?

STEVE FLESCH: Well, arguably, with his wedge game that's probably the right call. But it's one of those things where you think, how can you not go for it with 200 in. But if you can't keep it on the green and you hit a good shot, it might not be worth it because there's enough movement in the greens where you put yourself in a bad spot you couldn't get it up-and-down anyway. So it makes you think.

The other thing that they did is they kind of put the bunkering out there in the layup area at about a hundred yards. If you ever ask a pro, what's your favorite yardage in for a third shot on a 5, they're probably going to say anywhere from 85 to a hundred. Well you can't get that here. So you lay up to a little more or you're stuck with like 70ish. Which I don't mind, you know, it's okay. You don't always -- every par-5 you don't have to have 85 yard perfect L wedge or 60 degree, you know. So the only other place I remember that being was at TPC Boston up there where we played Deutsche Bank, that bunker literally sets at 95 yards. So nothing wrong with making pros think. Believe me, we don't like to have to make decisions. But when you put stuff out there where it makes us think, that's where we get uneasy. So there's a lot of good elements out there. I think to a man nobody understands the tees, but, whatever, you know. So all in all I think it's pretty good. It's in unbelievable shape. The fairways are fantastic. I actually like the thing about the tees I do like is that they're fairway length where you can get -- they're all cut the same. Like I said, I mean, it's in phenomenal shape and the tees and the fairways are the same length. But it's phenomenal.

Q. It's pretty neat. Have you done anything around the campus?

STEVE FLESCH: I haven't. I'm boring. I just kind of show up and play and then I go back to the hotel. But it's a neat place. It's a hell of a compound. Pretty cool idea.
