LPGA DRIVE ON CHAMPIONSHIP

March 25, 2023

Maddie Szeryk

Gold Canyon, Arizona, USA

Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Take us a little bit through your round today. What maybe was harder about the course for you today than you found in the last couple rounds?

MADDIE SZERYK: I think today I was just in between a lot of clubs, and we were on the clock, too, so didn't have as much time to really talk through everything.

I think we did the best we could. It was just one of those days where we were in between numbers a lot and just trying to figure out how -- where the best spot to leave myself was.

Just didn't have as many close putts today and so couldn't really get in a good rhythm of birdie putts.

Q. What were some of the highlights of your round? I know there were a couple out there.

MADDIE SZERYK: I started off birdie-birdie which was exciting. There were some good moments, and just trying to stay positive for tomorrow.

Q. It's been over 20 years since anybody besides Brooke, any Canadian besides Brooke won on tour. Lorie Kane was the last one in 2001. How cool is it to be in the mix on Sunday and try to add your name to that list of winners?

MADDIE SZERYK: Yeah, it would be pretty special to do that. That was a goal this year, just put myself in contention more and to be more comfortable with it and just learn from it.

But that would be obviously very special and a great accomplishment.

Q. Through the day are you sort of a leaderboard watcher? Does that affect where you stand, what you do?

MADDIE SZERYK: Somewhat. It kind of varies day-to-day how I'm feeling whether I can handle it or not.

I saw on I think it was maybe 14 or 15 that I bogeyed, but I saw -- I thought I was -- because I was only 1-under, 1- or 2-under at that point and I thought I moved way down, and I saw that I was still tied for fourth and I think I finished tied for seventh.

So I was in a better spot than I thought I was so that was helpful of, okay, I really need to make sure I just make bogey and not make double here and make it worse.

Q. Last question: Strategy for tomorrow. Obviously saw a lot people going low today. Do you think you can do that?

MADDIE SZERYK: Yeah, definitely. Today was a very off day and still shot 1-under with a lot of missed birdie putts and not some great iron shots and wedges in, so there is definitely a lot of chances.

And just being nervous with being -- I think first time being in a final group, so just handling all of that nerves, and tomorrow I can just really go out and play my game.
