Plantation Course at Kapalua
Quick Quotes
Q. 7-under par. Nice start. You mentioned you're a little rusty. If we could get some comments on a really good round.
TOM HOGE: Yeah. I felt a lot better swing today than I have the first few practice days here in Maui. So hit a few nice shots early. Hole 3 I hit a good wedge shot in there to 4, 5 feet and made a birdie.
Then just hit a lot better shots and felt like it was fun to get back out here and compete again after a little layoff.
Q. Nice birdie on 17 as well. Take us through that and some tricky winds?
TOM HOGE: Yeah. The wind seemed like it was moving around a lot all day long, especially on the front nine it felt like every hole we played it was a little bit different direction.
But we got on 17 and practice rounds it's been a little bit downwind off the right and today it was into the wind. So judging that second shot distance you want to land it about 175 and I think it plays like 15 yards downhill. So there's just a lot of time that ball's in the air, kind of over the canyon, kind of getting hit by a lot of wind in our face today. And luckily judged it pretty well and hit a good 6-iron there, 12, 15, feet behind the hole and made the putt. So it was a good hole for me and probably my best swing of the day there with a 6-iron into the green.
Q. Just your overall thoughts on this golf course. It's a big course.
TOM HOGE: Well it's a tough walk, for sure. But, yeah, I mean should drive it in the fairway on every hole, because the fairways are very wide. So you should have a lot of scoring chances, which we've seen past years with the scores being so low. So certainly know that I've got to make a lot more birdies the next few days and hopefully can get that putter to heat up a little bit.
