NL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: PHILLIES VS PADRES

October 22, 2022

Yu Darvish

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Citizens Bank Park

San Diego Padres

Pregame 4 Press Conference

Q. It seems like over your career you've had some really good success against the Phillies and really good here at this ballpark. I think at one point 4.2 earned run average in your four outing, which is the lowest of any venue you've pitched at. What is it about this ballpark and pitching against this ball club that makes you feel so comfortable?

YU DARVISH: Actually, I didn't know like -- I didn't think I was doing that well at this stadium. Actually I'm a bit surprised to hear those numbers.

Q. What have you learned is the key to facing a team a second time in a row as part of a series when you just faced them your last start? What is the key to attacking those hitters?

YU DARVISH: That's a little bit tricky because it's not like I pitched poorly in the first game. I think I'll go into the game with Noles, see what the approach of the hitters are, and kind of try to go from there.

Q. This team and this particular postseason, even though this happens to teams in postseasons in general, you guys have faced a lot of what people define as must-win games -- Game 3 in New York, probably Game 2 in L.A., Game 4 so it didn't go back to L.A. Now this weekend you're finding yourself in that situation. As a team, how difficult is it to kind of play through so many of those in a period of maybe a few weeks? What do you have to do collectively as a team to do that?

YU DARVISH: What I think is important is just go as you usually do, prepare for the game and go into the game.

Sometimes winning a game and losing a game, there's some luck involved in that, so that kind of comes into play. The best we can do is just really prepare ourselves for the big game and go into it and try to perform.

Q. I saw you met Schwarber before. Did you punch him, and what was your conversation?

YU DARVISH: Yeah, so he gave me the gesture, but I kind of backed off because he's a pretty big guy.

We didn't talk much about baseball. It's more about how our families are doing, you know, our time in Chicago and all that. He's a good friend of mine. Yeah, the conversation was more so towards how our family and all that.

Q. All of your runs in this postseason have been solo home runs. A pitcher takes that in the regular season. Is that different in the postseason, solo home runs, and maybe just because of the pressure that's on each game?

YU DARVISH: I don't think there's much of a difference between the regular season or the playoffs giving up solo home runs. Sometimes you just have to kind of accept it, be okay with it, because there will be home runs.

Maybe there might be a little bit more home runs in the postseason, but, no, I don't think there's much difference between the regular and the postseason.
