Umpire Quick Quotes
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: All Buck requested was for us to check for an illegal substance. That's what the crew did. We checked him and found nothing.
Q. Did he say anything, just I want you to check him out?
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: He just requested a check. That's what we did, and once we found nothing, I just gave him a thumbs up, and we continued.
Q. It's unusual to have a manager come out mid-game like that. I haven't seen that even since the crackdown began. Is that the first time your crew's had that?
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: Yes. Actually, no. I did a different check a couple of years ago actually.
Q. And what did you have Bob come out and ask?
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: Nothing. We brought Bob out to make sure we told him, hey, this is what we've been requested to do. This is what we're going to do. Did it, and that was it.
MIKE EVERITT: From the office perspective, from the umpire department, they did exactly what we directed. If a manager asks, they get together as a crew, they ask for specifics. They conduct the search. They did that.
But before they even did that, they did something really good, what we want them to do. Had to get the opposing manager to let them know and have the manager out there. So they did everything what we asked them to do, and that's exactly how it should be handled.
Q. Did anyone, either manager, raise the issue -- well, who knows if Buck did, but TV made a big deal -- the stepping out and whether that was gamesmanship? Obviously next year that will be different.
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: No.
Q. Under the manual, you're not supposed to keep pushing them in the box when they keep stepping out like that?
ALFONSO MARQUEZ: It has nothing to do with that, absolutely nothing.
