NL WILD CARD SERIES: PHILLIES VS CARDINALS

October 8, 2022

Alec Bohm

St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Busch Stadium

Philadelphia Phillies

Postgame Press Conference

Cardinals, 0 - Phillies, 2

Q. As Sosa is coming toward you for that last out, what were you thinking, and were you the first one to jump over the railing and just grab him?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah. Being in the dugout in that situation is way worse than being on the field. But yeah, they hit like six foul balls that didn't stay in. So finally one stayed in, and yeah, just waiting for the last out, but it was great, yeah.

Q. Can you even think about where you were at the beginning of the season, like six months ago?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah.

Q. To where you are now and reflect on how this season has gone for you personally?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah. Personally, I mean, just -- just all those guys in the locker room helped me so much, staff included, all of them. But, yeah, just it's been a long road, but, you know, this is why we play, to get here.

Q. It seemed like you were pretty excited in the fifth inning when you were on third base. I think it was Schwarber at the plate. He scored you with a sac fly. Can you run us through what was going through your head in that moment?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah. Anytime Schwarber is up there, it's a good chance he's going to do something good for us. So, yeah, we were up 1-0. Knowles is doing his thing. We were trying to give him as much breathing room as we can and score as many runs as we can. But these kind of games, runs can be tough to come by, so anytime you can scratch one, it's big.

Q. I forgot which inning it was Goldschmidt struck out and J.T. threw the ball. You were thinking it was three outs?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah. It was kind of a long inning, so I don't know. I mean, I can understand why he thought it would have been three outs. But I was just going over to cover third, and he kept walking. But it all worked out. It's all good.

Q. Just obviously with Rob managing, how special this is to do with everything he's been able to do this year since he's become manager?

ALEC BOHM: He's a baseball lifer. He's at the field before anyone, there before anyone leaves. He's our heart and soul really, man. He's just steady every day. Keeps us calm, keeps us right where we need to be. And he pushes the right buttons, does what he needs to do. And I think he's the right man to lead us. He's been great for us.

Q. What did you see out of playing behind Aaron today?

ALEC BOHM: Just the same stuff I've seen all year. Anytime he takes the ball, you know you're going to be in the game. You know he's going to be prepared. He works harder than anybody I've ever seen, man. He just -- you're confident every time he takes the ball because you know he's in the right place. You know he's prepared. You know that he's going to do whatever it takes.

Q. Tying runs on base and Seranthony goes through two MVP candidates, strikes them out. Can you describe what it was like watching him?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah. That's good on good. Right? That's our guy. Those are their guys. Seranthony is nasty. Everybody knows it. And to get through those two guys right there, I mean, that's the game right there. Those are two of the best hitters in baseball, you know. And so it's a tough task in that situation to go through those two, and that's why he's our guy.

Q. And what kind of challenge is Atlanta? You guys know them very well obviously?

ALEC BOHM: We know them very well. We know it's a good team. It's going to be a tough series, but it's going to be fun. Nobody said it was going to be easy. You gotta earn it. So, yeah, it's going to be a lot of fun. We're going to go in there, and it's going to be some competitive baseball, for sure.

Q. And to follow that up, just knowing them the way that you guys do, I mean, what kind of influence can the familiarity just have over that series?

ALEC BOHM: Yeah, I think, you know, just from obviously their hitters have faced our guys a lot. We've faced their guys a lot. So I mean, you might try to do some different things. You might not. Who knows. But I think at the end of the day, it's just going to be a lot of competitive games, a lot of, you know, their guys are going to bring their best stuff, and we're going to do what we can do. And at the end of the day, it's just playing the game.

Q. You guys have won a lot of close games during the regular season, come from behind wins. Do you think that the fight that you've shown during the regular season has kind of prepared you in a way for what you guys have done in the postseason?

ALEC BOHM: For sure. You know, that's kind of been our mentality, right? Just don't quit. We're playing every out, and I think at the end of the day, you don't gotta look at the scoreboard. You get down a couple of runs early or whatever it may be, you just play the game. And that's what Topper has been so good for us with is just play the game and see what happens.

Q. How excited are you personally to get back to Citizens Bank Park and play in front of the home crowd?

ALEC BOHM: It's great. They haven't got to see postseason baseball in a long time, obviously. So we're excited for the fans, excited for the city, excited for the organization. It's going to be a lot of fun. Excited to see the Citizens Bank packed out.
