Quick Quotes
Q. Max, what a great win. You get the full point with the miss by Pendrith on the 18th green. How exciting is it for you to contribute today in this fashion and play alongside Tony Finau?
MAX HOMA: Unreal. It was an unreal day. So giddy all week, and then today I was on a million. I legitimately have the best partner I could ask for. He's super calm. He's obviously one of the most talented people I've ever seen play golf.
It was very fun. I felt like we played steady and we both did our thing a little bit.
Q. Tony, describe the match. It was tight all the way to the 18th green.
TONY FINAU: Yeah, it was. We played a great match, kind of hole by hole. Took the lead early. They made a couple of birdies in the middle of the match, and things got tight at the end.
He hit two amazing drives that set us up for a birdie on 16 and put me right in the middle of the fairway on 18 to hit the green and win with the par. So I'm so proud of this guy.
I said it before we started this week, none of our guys are rookies. These guys are winners, and Max proved that not only to me today but to our team. It's cool to get this full point with this guy.
Q. Max, 4 to 1 after day 1, what does that mean to your team?
MAX HOMA: It means a lot. All of the guys were very excited about this week. We're playing great, put in a lot of work. It's cool to end the day 4-1. I'm really excited for tomorrow.
Q. Max, you came to the 18th green here, there was a lot of ebb and flow in that match. How would you describe what happened there?
TONY FINAU: Well, whoever hits the fairway is going to have the big advantage. Homa stepped up after Mito missed the fairway and hit the middle of the fairway. So he set us up for me to be able to aim at the middle of the green and force them to putt to have the match.
And Taylor, you know, hit a good putt and it just missed. Happy with the full point.
Q. Your first time in a stage like this. For it to come down to the final hole, a great match. What was it like emotionally for you?
MAX HOMA: Tony keeps me very, very calm. You know, you can tell he's competitive and wants to win, but he's, like, a soothing partner, and he makes it easy. Where he hits his drives is very fun. I just have to kind of keep the pulse out there. But it was an amazing day. The crowds were incredible.
As Tony said on 16, this is what makes us feel alive. I felt very alive today.
Q. Tony, Americans take 4 of the 5 matches today. What do you anticipate the tone of the team to be like tonight?
TONY FINAU: Well, we did what we were supposed to do. I feel like the tone of the matches are just one match at a time. We're not looking ahead to anything.
Now we focus on tomorrow. See what the matches look like tomorrow. It's best ball tomorrow. We'll go back and see what the captain has to say about us for tomorrow.
This thing is far from over. It's a great start, but you know how these things can go.
We're happy, of course, with this start, but not complacent. We're ready to get back after it tomorrow.
