Quick Quotes
Q. Jill, 2-under 71. Nice round of golf out there. What have you learned from the course the last two days?
JILL McGILL: It helps to be in the fairway and it helps to be on the correct side of the hole. It's hard to make putts when you're above it. I feel very defensive when I'm above the hole, just looking for the right speed, and when you have to hit it that softly, it can wiggle off line a little bit. The course is great. They've done a fabulous job getting it in condition, and I think it's setting up -- Shannon did an amazing job setting up the course, and I think the scores are out there.
It's fun.
Q. How does it feel heading into the weekend in contention? It's not a feeling that all of you feel week-to-week anymore.
JILL McGILL: Well, I don't know if this makes me more nervous or going in for childbirth, one of the two. I'm getting my nine-month-old puppies back from military school, so I don't know which one is more challenging at the moment. But it's fun to be in this position. We'll see if my kids make it out. I said, if I make it in the top 10 you guys can fly out, so we'll see if that happens.
Q. Can you tell us about your preparation for this week.
JILL McGILL: Well, I have a very good friend in Dallas that's been helping me a lot. His name is Pat O'Brien, and the whole crew where I'm doing a little teaching over at Tennyson golf there in Dallas, I'm trying to inspire my ladies, so that's always a motivator, and you know, I've prepared as much as I could in between driving to swim team practice and teaching and school dropoff and pickup and wouldn't have it any other way.
Q. When this championship was first created and you knew it would be on your radar, did that change anything over the past four years, how you've digested it from afar or prepared from a golf standpoint?
JILL McGILL: Well, I knew I could do it until I was 50, so my sister was the one who let me know that I had an exemption into it, so thank you, Shelley. I appreciate that. I've always been looking forward to playing in the U.S. Senior Women's Open. I love the USGA. I think they do a great job with golf. I have a history with the USGA. I'm glad to be back here playing in a championship.
Q. When we said we were going back to San Diego Country Club, what does that mean to you?
JILL McGILL: Well, my exemption runs out that year, so I'm going to have to keep on preparing because there is -- how great would that be to go back there and play in the Open? It would be fabulous, yes.
Q. How long have you been teaching?
JILL McGILL: Oh, maybe 15 months.
Q. You're new.
JILL McGILL: Well, the golf course was four or five minutes away from my house, and I walked over there and I talked to the director of golf, and I just asked him what was going on. I mean, it's fun. It's really -- especially for the ladies, half of the job is just getting them to feel comfortable, just time and time again. They're intimidated, they just want to make sure that they feel comfortable on the golf course. So I really like that aspect, giving them encouragement just to go do it.
Q. How old are your kids?
JILL McGILL: Blaze is six and Bella is 10, and Luna and Baiter, the little stinkers, are nine months.
Q. But well-trained, all of them.
JILL McGILL: Yes, yeah. We use an e-collar, which I know is controversial, but I'll tell you what, when they don't pull you on a walk, you'll use one, too.
