TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP

August 25, 2022

Cameron Young

Atlanta, Georgia, USA

East Lake Golf Club

Quick Quotes

CAMERON YOUNG: You're just chasing down the guys in front of you. I don't know, I think I played pretty well today. I'll be kicking myself for the way I played the last six holes or so. I hit a couple really bad putts and a couple bad tee shots which kind of forced me to -- I made some nice saves, but still just frustrating the way I finished because I felt like I played really nicely for a while today.

Q. And then the conditions, what was that like? You've not seen this course anyway, have you, before?

CAMERON YOUNG: No, I haven't. It's all new to me.

Q. You had what was in front of you?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah. Obviously the fairways are soft. They had a lot of rain. Even while we were out there, it rained really hard for about the whole 4th hole. But yeah, the greens are fantastic. It's definitely gettable just because I think it's easier to hit the fairways when it's not rolling as much. But yeah, it's certainly an awesome place. It's a great test of golf.

Q. I might have missed something there; did you have a moment of total downpour?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yes, we did.

Q. That was No. 4?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, I think No. 4. I don't even know all the holes. I think it's 4, up the hill.

Q. Did the soft conditions help you chase down Scottie or does it help him run away with it?

CAMERON YOUNG: I don't know, I don't think it really matters. I think good golf out here is going to yield good scores. I think it's a place that lends itself very well to this tournament. If you go play great, you can shoot 5-, 6-, 7-under, and if you don't, you're going to struggle. Yeah, I think -- I don't know, it definitely makes the scores go down, so it gives you an opportunity to shoot something really low.

Q. Rookie of the Year, it looks like you may have that locked up. What would that mean if you were to win that, and does any moment this year stand out to you?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, that would be obviously a really nice honor. I think we have a great rookie class this year. I know Sahith is here, Davis narrowly missed, Mito almost won a major. So I think it's been a really good year for the rookies.

Yeah, to come out on top of that would be great, especially given my ties to Wake Forest with Arnold Palmer also being a big part of that program. I mean, it's something that we didn't really think about much early, but as the season has gone on, it's something that I've known in the back of my head would be nice to accomplish.

Q. Was eagling the last at St Andrews probably the highlight?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, certainly one of them. Honestly, I go back to Sanderson Farms, the first time I finished second. At that point, that finish I think was way bigger than it's given credit for because it kind of reshuffled me a lot higher and I got into a lot of things I might not have otherwise, something like Riviera, where I had another good finish.

So I think, yes, that one at the British Open was awesome and fun to do at St Andrews in an Open Championship, but I think there were some earlier ones, too, that kind of set the pace for the year.

Q. Cameron, when you started your year, could you have imagined yourself being here?

CAMERON YOUNG: Yeah, it was one of the goals that I set for myself was to be here, yeah.

Q. You've just mentioned a couple of strong memories that you've had this year, so I need you to take yourself out of the picture for a minute so whatever happened to you this year doesn't count. What would you consider the best moment in golf this year?

CAMERON YOUNG: Oh, man. I don't know. I think Tony Finau winning back-to-back was really cool. I don't know what he was on the FedExCup, but I don't think he had had a stellar year, and he's obviously a great player, very highly ranked in the world but hadn't been in that top 10 or top 15 on the FedExCup, and he shot 50-under for two weeks or something. I think that's something that -- I don't think it got overlooked but is really way more remarkable than people might realize.
