THE 150TH OPEN

July 17, 2022

Barclay Brown

St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, UK

Mixed Zone

Q. Well done on still an amazing week, an achievement. I guess a bit of a roller coaster, was it?

BARCLAY BROWN: Obviously stumbled home a little bit, but I was happy with the week overall. Played really nicely kind of throughout, and just play left me a little bit, a few bad breaks on the weekend, and it just didn't quite happen for me.

Q. Did you find out that sequence of holes particularly difficult? I noticed you tripped up a bit.

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, I think it was really just the way it happened. I hit some drives I thought were going to be good on 14, 15, 16. Both days, really. They just ended up in bad spots. As I said, the putting just wasn't there this weekend.

Q. I guess it was a nice moment, I mean, something to tell your mates back at uni, birdieing the 18th.

BARCLAY BROWN: It was nice to finish with that, yeah, consolation.

Q. How were you feeling by then?

BARCLAY BROWN: A little bit defeated, but enjoying the walk up there and trying to think about the whole week as opposed to the last hour and a half.

Q. What will you do -- what are you doing sort of this coming week, for example, when life gets back to normal slightly?

BARCLAY BROWN: I'm flying to Slovakia to play for Great Britain and Ireland in a couple of days. Yeah, I'll be straight over there.

Q. What would you say -- what's the kind of biggest learning and take-away experience from the whole four days here?

BARCLAY BROWN: I think I've gotten better throughout at just kind of handling myself and managing my nerves and my behaviour throughout, just kind of how I felt really although the scores maybe didn't reflect it. I think I got a lot better at managing myself in front of these crowds, a new experience for me.

Q. The next couple of years, you're going to get back to Stanford, are you?

BARCLAY BROWN: A couple years left at Stanford, yeah.

Q. And do you think that will -- after that, the plan would be to turn pro presumably?

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, it will be afterwards, yeah.

Q. And also, what was it like playing with Danny? I know he's from your home city?

BARCLAY BROWN: It was brilliant. I hadn't really spoken to Danny much before, but really nice. He's great company and a good chat all the way around.

Q. Did he kind of -- was he any -- I know he was concentrating on his own game, but could he tell you something?

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, he was rooting for me from the start, which was nice.

Q. So you go back home tonight and Slovakia presumably Tuesday morning?

BARCLAY BROWN: Yes.

Q. I'm doing the Guardian Life blog this week, and you've become a bit of a cult figure for us. We think your name is fantastic. We wanted to know the inspiration of your parents going with Barclay was?

BARCLAY BROWN: I have absolutely no idea. I think it's Scottish. My dad's Scottish, and I think that's as much I've got really.

Q. We think you sound like sort of a character actor from the 1950s, Barclay Brown. Have you got any acting in your background?

BARCLAY BROWN: Unfortunately, no. I dropped drama at school fairly early on, I think as soon as I could. It was not my strong point.

Q. What is it you're studying at Stanford?

BARCLAY BROWN: Economics and international relations.

Q. So, yeah, far more serious. The fact that you're sticking at Stanford, are you enjoying the academic side of it?

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, I'm having a great time there. I really enjoy it.

Q. So many enjoy the experience and then sort of push on. So you must be enjoying it.

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, I am enjoying it. I think it's the right place for me to keep working on my game and go and get my degree as well.

Q. And a good part of the world to spend a few years.

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, it's beautiful.

Q. Was this the first interviews you've ever done, Barclay?

BARCLAY BROWN: Uh-huh.

Q. You've done a couple of local paper things I saw. But standing up here and stuff on TV is kind of new.

BARCLAY BROWN: Yeah, it's the first time.
