Quick Quotes
Q. The look on your face on 18, what were you thinking when you saw that shot and hit it?
GARY WOODLAND: I couldn't really see if it was on line. I was trying to get it past the hole to try to putt back into the wind but obviously hit the pin going in, was a big bonus.
I played beautifully, drove the golf ball great. Kept it in play. Pace, speed of the greens for me was as good as my face has ever been. Big emphasis this week on trying to get more familiar with that, especially for next week.
Q. What's the key for you making the adjustment, links golf, Scottish golf? What did you have to focus on the most?
GARY WOODLAND: Yeah, I think the big deal is the pace of greens. They are usually typically so fast back home and over here you can't get them that fast with the conditions.
I've struggled coming over here. I played the Scottish once before, 2011, so it's been a long time. But it's nice to get over here and get familiar with the speed of the greens. That will be a big deal next week as well.
Q. 6-under for you, Cameron is out there, scoring average over par, any explanation?
GARY WOODLAND: Yesterday was brutal. Yesterday was a nice Scottish day with cold, windy, rainy -- but today, the golf course is perfect. I drove the golf ball in the fairway, and that's huge out here. There's some tough driving holes. You've got to keep it in play. I did that today, and I gave myself a chance to be a little more aggressive into the green.
Q. A terrific way to start the week off here in Scotland. Start with 18, chipping from off the side of the green. Give us your thoughts on that shot.
GARY WOODLAND: Yeah, there, the shot I'm trying to get it up-and-down. Trying to get it past, I always like putting back into the wind so tried to hit the shot past the hole. It was a bone to us hit the flag and go in.
But 18 is a brutal hole. I don't hit 2-iron short of many par 4s. Hit driver, 2-iron short and was lucky away to walk away with three. All in all, happy with the way I played today.
Q. How much do you have to adjust your game to different types of conditions and golf courses?
GARY WOODLAND: The adjustment is not too much. I like to play the golf ball low. I grew up playing in the wind, so I like to hit low shots and that sets up beautifully over here. The imagination around the greens, you can putt it from about anywhere you want.
It's nice to get over here early. I've struggled with the pace of the greens and put a big emphasis with my coach, Phil Kenyon, on the pace of the greens and it paid off today.
Q. How did you find the Scottish hospitality?
GARY WOODLAND: The fans are so knowledgeable over here. I've been over here and played the golf course next door when it's been rainy and cold, and nobody in the States would be back out playing. They love their golf and know what they are talking about, and very knowledgeable golf and nice to play in front of.
