Quick Quotes
Q. Here with Leona Maguire coming off her second round of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. Can you just tell me some of the highlights of the round and what was working well for you today.
LEONA MAGUIRE: Yeah, gave myself a lot of chances today. I think it was a little easier this morning, not quite as windy as yesterday. It was pretty nice. It was kind of hanging on yesterday, so didn't quite take advantage of the par-5s as well as I would've liked.
But had a nice birdie on 2 and that kind of got the round going.
Q. What do you need to do to take advantage of those par-5s moving forward?
LEONA MAGUIRE: Just hit it closer I think. I could reach a couple today, and then, yeah, just didn't get my wedge shots close enough. Go work on that this afternoon and hopefully get those dialed in for the weekend.
Q. What were some of the challenges out there? I know you said the wind kind of died off. What were some of the other challenges in the course?
LEONA MAGUIRE: The wind is swirly, so it's changing directions and so you have to be patient and sort of trust the wind is where you think it is with all the trees and stuff.
So definitely yesterday afternoon it was a lot tougher. It was very swirly. Just trying to stay patient, hit a lot of fairways, hit a lot of greens.
Q. I'm doing a side feature on you and sort of your return here because you had a really good tournament here last year. Obviously fell by two shots to Nelly. Then Solheim happened, sort of took the golf world by storm. Got your first win in February. What's your whole year been like since you were last year?
LEONA MAGUIRE: Yeah, been busy. Obviously Solheim, Olympics, got my first win at the start of the year. Yeah, this week last year was a big confidence booster for me. I played some really great golf here and went toe to toe with Nelly who then became No. 1 the next week, so I knew my game was in really good shape when I could do that, so gave me a lot confidence leading on from that.
Q. I remember we spoke last year how this course sort of reminds you of courses back home. Does that sort of hold true again coming back here for a second time?
LEONA MAGUIRE: Yeah, 100%. It's very green with all the trees. The wind yesterday reminded me of home a little bit.
It's in such good shape. It's really nice to come to a golf course that the greens are in as good a shape as they are here. It's a little softer which, again, sets up a lot chances. If it stays hot and a little bit windy, they'll dry out as the week goes on.
Q. Your sister is here. I know she doesn't travel with you every single week anymore, but how nice is it to have her here, and does that give another familiarity aspect to it?
LEONA MAGUIRE: Yeah, 100%. It's always nice having her out on the road. She's been out for a few weeks now, so this week and next week at KPMG she'll be out. Yeah, having her walk along and supporting me is always a benefit.
Q. You said that this week sort of spurred your confidence -- last year this tournament spurred your confidence. How important is that confidence, finding it again, heading into KPMG next week?
LEONA MAGUIRE: Yeah, it's huge. I think it'll be a very different test next week at Congressional, but this week it's about trying to go as low as possible. So it will be really good for dialing in the wedges and the irons, and ultimately it's going to come down to who putts the best over the weekend.
Heading into the a major, the better you're putting, that only be a good thing.
