KITCHENAID SENIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

May 26, 2022

Mike Weir

Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA

Press Conference

Harbor Shores

JOHN DEVER: Good afternoon, welcome back to the 2022 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores.

Opened with a 6-under par 65, currently tied for the lead. You started on the back, I believe.

MIKE WEIR: Yes.

Q. Really a strong first nine. You got to have a really good start. How did that nudge you and gain some momentum?

MIKE WEIR: It was nice to start with a birdie. I hit a really nice drive opening out and followed that with a rescue club that left myself 30 feet or something or eagle. Nice two-putt there to get the day started and my day was just a lot of really good ball-striking. A lot of shots, my proximity to the hole would have been close to the hole a lot. But I converted them. I converted the 8-footers and I kind of had a couple blemishes object front ball in all it was a really good day.

JOHN DEVER: What were some of the putt lengths.

MIKE WEIR: I did make a couple nice par putts on my back nine, which was my first nine. Maybe I made one on the par 3, guess, 13 from probably eight feet for par, that kind of kept some momentum going. And then on 16, I hit an 8-iron to probably six or seven feet.

17, I hit a 6-iron to 12 feet. I made that one. Trying to think of my other birdies, the par 3 over the water, No. 4, I cut a 5-iron in there two feet and then I wedged it two feet the next hole.

7, coming in, I hit a 6-iron to six feet and almost chipped in on the last. Left it short by two feet. It wasn't a lot of long putts but you've still got to make them and I was able to do them.

I looked up on 8, had a nice look at it on 8 from about 12 feet and burned the edge there. Hit a really nice pitch on the last hole from just in front of the green and almost made that one and tapped in for a good finish.

JOHN DEVER: You talked about yesterday, trying to find something that you were trying to concentrate and work on. Did that come to fruition?

MIKE WEIR: Yeah, my short game was much better. I think the last tournament I played was the regents tradition and I had a nice 5-under final round and started to find something there a little bit with my short game, putting in particular and cared that forward today. Things were better today.

Q. How good did it feel to pick up that momentum and translate it to solid golf?

MIKE WEIR: My coach is in Birmingham and we spent a lot of time working on things. It took me a few days to right the ship there but Sunday was a good day at that tournament and to carry that forward was great. Nice to have a week off last week and work on things and come in here a little bit more fresh.

Q. How has does this course suit your game?

MIKE WEIR: I think pretty well. First time around, playing Pro-Am and a practice round, I really like the layout. It's challenging. A lot of crosswinds. We had a bit of a break at the end of the day. It was pretty calm last four or five holes, maybe three holes, it was really calm. But most of the time you're going to get some crosswinds. Gets your attention off the tee with some tee shots and you have to step up there and try to hit those tar guess. Overall, I think the layout is really fun. It's going to get cooler and challenging the next few days.

Q. So many low scores, doesn't surprise you?

MIKE WEIR: That's the nature of the Champions Tour now. Lots of low scores. Guys really play well, and you have to get off to a good start. You have to keep the pedal down out here.
