ROLAND GARROS

May 22, 2022

Garbine Muguruza

Paris, France

Press Conference

K. KANEPI/G. Muguruza

2-6, 6-3, 6-4

THE MODERATOR: Garbine, that's a tough first round opponent, can you just talk us through the match a little bit?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Yes, very experienced opponent. I think I started very well, although the first couple of games I was start nervous, but I managed to turn them around and get the first set and be dominating.

Then obviously in the second set it was a moment where I hesitated maybe to close the match, well close the match, get more dominant, and she came out with great tennis and managed to put me in a third set.

Then in the third set I think it was a very good set, you would have, it could have go both ways, I have a feeling.

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English first.

Q. What was the most uncomfortable for you from her side today?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: The most uncomfortable? I mean I think she served well. I think that would be the biggest strength from her today.

Q. Unlucky today, a question off the court. I just wanted your reaction to the news about Wimbledon and points as a former champion, obviously, it's big news for everyone, but I just wondered your thoughts on that and whether you think it was the decision that should have happened.

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Oh, man, the last thing I'm thinking now is Wimbledon points. I don't have an opinion right now. I think it's been in the debate, I've been hearing and listening, but I don't know what to tell you right now. I will have a thought maybe at next press conference I can give you a solid answer.

Q. Obviously it's been a bit of a tough year for you relative to some of your other years. But a brilliant end to last season. Is it hard, having success and confidence at the end of a season and trying to carry that through to the next one?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: It is very hard at the end. You don't have nothing guaranteed. The fact that you finished the year, the previous year well doesn't guarantee that you're going to start the year playing at the same level. I mean, you got to work and you got to fight for it. We all know that every year is different and so far just working through it.

Q. Is there anything you can put your year down to so far? Is there any way you can explain this season so far?

GARBINE MUGURUZA: Yeah, it's been a tough season though. I mean, I've had matches so much in control, but then it's, I don't manage to close and it gets complicated and then a match is a match and at the end there's only a winner. But I feel that I'm training hard, I'm putting the work, I'm playing tournaments, trying to switch those moments, try to get more confident.

So we're going to keep doing it. I mean at some point I'm a hundred percent sure that I'm going to go out there and get those wins that are slipping away right now from me.
