press conference
JOHN DEVER: Welcome back to the 2022 PGA Championship here at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Please to be joined by Sam Burns who carded a 1-over par 71 today. He's 1-under for the championship currently t-9.
Sam, I think that's 15 pars today for you, and yet you made up a decent bit of ground today. Is it easier to be patient when the challenge out there is so great that you're actually climbing the leaderboard with these pars?
SAM BURNS: Yeah, I think if you just look at the value of what a par is out there, I don't know how many holes they are playing under par, maybe 4 and maybe 13. So I mean, par is obviously a really good score on any hole today, so I think just trying to get as many looks as possible, and then when you get out of position, just trying to have a good chance for par.
Q. What cocktail out there is making the golf course so difficult this afternoon? We are hearing about wind, the dampness. From your shoes, what's causing it to be played so hard?
SAM BURNS: I think the complete opposite direction of wind from what we've had and then, you know, the par 3s are very challenging. I mean, I think I hit maybe two 4-irons, a 5-iron and obviously 11 is short.
But yeah, I mean, the pins aren't really very accessible. It's a combination of all those things.
JOHN DEVER: You're in the clubhouse now and you could gain some more ground as you go sit down and have an early dinner. That could play out that way, couldn't it.
SAM BURNS: Sure. 17 is obviously gettable today with it up, drivable. Then 18 is not that difficult of a hole, if you hit the fairway. Unfortunately I just hit it a yard into the left rough. But yeah, I mean, practice a little bit and grab some dinner and get ready for tomorrow.
JOHN DEVER: Can you win this tomorrow?
SAM BURNS: Yeah, I think who knows what's going to happen. I think it's going to be more scorable tomorrow just for the weather conditions we're going to have. But yeah, I think if I go out there and post a good round, you never know what can happen.
