COGNIZANT FOUNDERS CUP

May 15, 2022

Angel Yin

Clifton, New Jersey, USA

Upper Montclair Country Club

Quick Quotes

Q. Here with Angel Yin. Closed out your week at the Cognizant Founders Cup with a 5-under 67. You played really well this week. What are you most proud of?

ANGEL YIN: I'm proud of myself, honestly. (Laughing). Yeah, I have stayed pretty steady the whole entire week. Not too much emotions. I didn't really feel much pressure in the last day. Even today going into the last back nine.

A bit disappointed on 16 having a 3-putt, but I think I'm just pretty proud of myself keeping it together. It's not an easy golf course. It's tight, and it just was playing my game.

Q. Especially gets tighter when you are in contention. Just how did you kind of manage those emotions today? What was the thought process?

ANGEL YIN: When I was standing here yesterday, I was, like, you know, I'm just going to stick to my game plan and just do what I've been doing, and that's what I did.

I think that's the part I was most proud of with myself today. Just didn't really change much. Just stuck with my plan and stayed consistent emotionally and on the golf course game consistent too.

When you see your name up on the leaderboard with No. 1 next to it, like you said, not making a lot of cuts, like you said, I stayed pretty steady, so I'm proud of myself.

Q. Love that. Top three. This is the kind of an event or kind of finish that can really change the trajectory of a season. Again, just what does this kind of mean to you? Again, we talked about this yesterday.

ANGEL YIN: Well, I can answer that. I thought I was going to lose my card this year, but now I'm not going to lose my card hopefully.

So it's a big change. A big confidence booster. I'm looking forward to the match-play, and then the U.S. Open coming up.

Q. Match-play is obviously a different animal, but your a Solheim Cupper, you like that match-play. Just how excited are you to get to Vegas?

ANGEL YIN: I'm excited for the golf course because everyone says it's a bit different, it's a bit unique. So I'm excited to see that. I haven't played match-play -- well, obviously, since Solheim, but in tournament I haven't played it since Lorena's tournament, which is my rookie year, so I'm excited for that.

Q. How can you take a week like you had this week into a round where you maybe don't do as well to kind of remind yourself that you can be at the top of the leaderboard?

ANGEL YIN: Just know that if I play my game I know I'm going to be up there, so just had to stay steady and patient.

Because when I first started on Thursday my round wasn't looking so great after I made the turn. I think it was 2-over, and then I made four birdies in a row and then I made my way back into the tournament.

I was sitting around debating on whether I would be close to around the cut line to being closer to the leader board and to the top of the leader board.

Q. When you do go on a run of having multiple birdies in a row, is it hard to not get ahead of yourself where you might finish?

ANGEL YIN: Yeah, it is, because you're, like, wow, I can make five. They're doing really good. (Crowd cheering).

It can get really easy, but you just have to hit shot by shot, golf.

Q. What switched for you? I feel like maybe in the past it would have 2-over, and then it would have compounded on the back nine. Now you seem to be able to get yourself out of the holes a bit better.

ANGEL YIN: I think it happens when you see yourself play really, really, really bad golf. You're, like, I can't get any worse than that, so start making for birdies, I guess.

Q. We're heading into the meat of the season, four majors in two and a half months. How much confidence do you have going into really what is the season for us?

ANGEL YIN: It's a really nice start. Well, one, I've got some money now, which is good. I've been dry for a long time, so it's really nice to have some funding and I can go buy myself a nice meal now.

Just a huge confidence booster, especially since the U.S. Open is coming up, and it's one of my favorite events.

Q. It's been a long road for you to get back to this point. How did you stay positive through the past couple of years?

ANGEL YIN: Well, I really just started in the last year, so it wasn't that big of a dip. It just was more shocking to me because it was so drastic from finishing always around the top 20, closer to the leader board to last place.

It was a bit of a shock to me, and I think that, like I said yesterday, I think my friends really pulled me out of it. I've just been riding on that now.

Q. And you didn't come away with a win today, but still played really well. What type of consolation do you take from today or from this week and then moving forward?

ANGEL YIN: Just keep playing. Whatever I'm doing is working, so just keep doing that, and my name probably will be on top and no one in front of me, so hopefully that happens, yeah.
