Quick Quotes
Q. Here with Annie Park. Bit of a colorful scorecard today. Had five bogeys and seven birdies on your card for a 2-under 69. Just walk me through that 13 through 16 stretch. Made four in a row there.
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, I mean, even yesterday I told my caddie on the back -- well, our back nine -- let's aim for five birdies; yesterday I got five birdies.
Today I was like, let's grab four birdies, and grabbed my four birdies out there.
So, yeah, even just the beginning of the round I was aiming for a seven- to eight-birdie run.
Obviously my new plan tomorrow is to get less bogeys. So, yeah, it's been very eventful.
Q. Just take me through some of your personal highlights out there. Looks like you had back-to-back on 8 and 9 and the four in a row on the back nine.
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, I had some crazy putts out there. I think I made like a 90-footer on one of the par-3s.
Had a great shot on the par-5.
And then on the next hole I putted for birdie.
Yeah, it was three crazy holes.
Q. Last time we saw you at Chevron you were talking about trying to have more fun on the golf course.
ANNIE PARK: Uh-huh.
Q. When there is a lot of color on the scorecard sometimes players don't like that. Seems like you're having a lot of fun on the golf course right now.
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, I mean, pars were boring today I guess. So, yeah, I mean, there is going to be some crazy holes out there.
I mean, like today I missed a one-foot putt and I made a 90-footer. It's golf. It is what it is.
Q. Being the USC alum, this is a place that feels like home. How much of an advantage for you this week does that home course knowledge...
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, I love playing here. It's one of my favorite courses to play. It was definitely nice to have this as one of our home courses. We've had a college event, and I think my last year playing was my sixth win out here, so I got a lot of memories, great memories out here.
Always enjoy playing the course.
Q. You had the morning draw yesterday; afternoon draw today. What difference in the conditions were there between yesterday and today?
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, today the first couple holes it was super windy out there. It was playing completely different. The wind direction was completely opposite.
One hole I hit like 9-iron into the green and today I hit like 5-iron. Definitely played totally a different golf course.
Q. We were talking about this off camera but three different caddies last fee weeks. Are you a player that doesn't have a regular caddie or what's that about?
ANNIE PARK: No, I've been trying to find a regular caddie, and I think just during COVID and after COVID it's been really tough to find caddies out here.
The last couple weeks I have been trying to find someone that I could have more full time, and just had to get what I could get and whoever was available.
Q. You've been pretty open about the struggles you had last year and how you have kind of got yourself back to the point where you enjoy golf again this year.
ANNIE PARK: Uh-huh.
Q. How much is that mental transformation showing now that you're having a little bit more fun on the golf course?
ANNIE PARK: Yeah, I mean, I think that was huge. Like for an example, today I just went in to have a tap-in par and just lipped out. I think I'm definitely in a better spot I think mentally, and I think if it was like last year I would be like, why am I playing golf right now?
So today I was like, well, I was just -- like it happened.
And then on No. 16 I learned my lesson. I marked the ball and I told my caddie, I was like, I learned my lesson. Just going to wait. We're not going anywhere anyway.
Q. How much confidence will you carry from these first two rounds with you into the weekend?
ANNIE PARK: A little bit. I mean, I think -- I mean, still was a very eventful day today and yesterday as well.
I think I'm just going to keep patient out there tomorrow and on Sunday, and just see what the score takes us.
